She was born in March 1885 as Bastiaantje Witvoet (= White foot) in the country village Grootegast, located in the western part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, the ninth of 10 children of the 49 years aged farmer Gerrit Witvoet and Geertje Aardema.
She had in Grootegast the following nine siblings:
* Jantje, 8 June 1866, married 15 May 1891 in Grootegast Wobbe van der Veen, emigrated in 1897 with 3 children from Marum to the USA;
* Fokke, 24 February 1869;
* Lambertus, 26 March 1871;
* Neelina, 20 April 1872;
* Bastiaan, 16 June 1874, died 30 August 1881, Grootegast;
* Aaltje, 4 December 1876;
* Jan, 29 October 1879;
* Iwina, 4 October 1881;
* Anna Fokkelina, 2 August 1888.
Her brother Lambertus Witvoet emigrated in 1892 at the age of 21 years and without occupation from Grootegast to the USA. He arrived on 13 April 1892 on the ship Didam at the port of New York, Castle Garden. His destination was Hammond, Lake County, Indiana. Her brother Fokke Witvoet (24, no occupation) and sister Neelina Witvoet (20, no occupation) followed in April 1893. Laborer Fobbie [!] and Nelesan [!] Witvoet arrived on 19 April 1893 on the SS Maasdam at the port of New York, with as destination Bozeland [??, has maybe to be: Bozeman, in Montana, seat of Gallatin County?].
In 1893 she emigrated with her father Gerrit Witvoet (58, farmer, Dutch Reformed), her mother and four siblings from Grootegast to the USA. On 26 August 1893 Bastiaantje Witvoet (8), her father Gerrit Witvoet (58, farmer), her mother Geertje (48), her siblings Aaltje (16), Jan (13), Irvina (11) and Anna (4) arrived on the SS Rotterdam at the port of New York, Ellis Island. Their destination was the Dutch truck farmers settlement of Roseland, since 1892 a southern district of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. In 1897 her sister Jantje Witvoet emigrated with her husband, smith Wobbe van der Veen and their three children Wiebren, Gerrit and Fokke van der Veen, from Marum, Groningen, to North America. With that the whole family Witvoet had emigrated to the USA.
In June 1900 Bessie Witvoet (15 y, born in March 1885 in Holland, servant), her father Gerrit Witvoet (65, June 1835, Holland, farmer), her mother Gertjie (55, October 1845, Holland, mother of one deceased and eight living children), and her sisters Iwiene (19, October 1881, Holland, servant) and Annie (12, August 1888, Holland) were living at a rented farm in Thornton Township, located just south of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. They all immigrated in 1893.
