Obituary
Bernice Jane Vanderby, 45, Glenwood, died December 11, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, following a courageous battle with brain cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial was held December 15 at Church of the Sacred Heart in Glenwood with Father Peter J. Kirchner Jr. officiating. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Glenwood.
Bernice was born May 13, 1963 in Brainerd to Clarence and Elizabeth (Thesing) Koering. She grew up on a farm near Fort Ripley and then moved to Carlos with her family in the fall of 1973. She graduated from Jefferson High School in Alexandria in 1981. She was also a 1985 graduate of the Alexandria Technical College secretarial program.
On September 8, 1984, Bernice was united in marriage to Terry Allen Vanderby of Osakis at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Belle River. The couple first resided in Elbow Lake and shortly thereafter moved to Glenwood, where they have since resided. Bernice accepted employment at Eagle Bank in Glenwood in 1986 and continued to work there until her death.
Bernice loved the outdoors, riding four wheelers, snowmobiling, making trails in her woods, gardening, camping, animals and pretty much anything to do with the great outdoors. Most of all, Bernice loved spending time with her family and friends, especially watching her boys play sports. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church; singing in the choir and teaching religious education. She also donated her time and talents to many community organizations.
Bernice is survived by her husband of 24 years, Terry Vanderby of Glenwood; three sons, Nathan of Minneapolis, Travis of Alexandria and Tyler, at home; her parents, Clarence and Elizabeth (Thesing) Koering of Carlos; sister, Lois (Craig) Drexler of Carlos; two brothers, Dennis (Anne) Koering of Washington and Jason (Rebecca) Koering of Little Canada; father and mother-in-law, Allen and Dona (Barie) Vanderby of Osakis; a grandmother, Irma (Winter) Barie; sisters-in-law, Tammy (Larry) Gettel of Osakis and Tanya (Dane) Hagen of Alexandria; nieces and nephews, Jarrod, Alisha and Olivia Drexler, Cassandra, Evan, Brianne and Braden Koering, Samuel Koering, Jocelyn and Evan Gettel, Alexis and Mariah Hagen; and a great-nephew, Lucas Drexler.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Herman and Olivia (Kiffmeyer) Koering and George and Gladys (Kimball) Thesing; and a nephew, Jeremy Gettel.
