Subject: «b»Whittington Families «/b»Charles Underhill«b» born 1891«/b» My grandfather gave the address of his eldest sister Elizabeth in West hartlepool then in Co Durham when he enlisted in the army on the 6th Nov 1916.
His age was given as 25yrs 5months,he was a labourer and a widower.
Ellen his wife died in Sept 1913.
His preferance of unit was L..the rest wasn't clear.
He was placed at first in the 3rd batt North Staffordshire Regt but later transferred to the 7th Batt. His record states he was examined at Sunderland.weight 147 lbs.height 5foot 10inches chest 39ins.
He left Wallsend on the 14th March 1917 with the 7th Battalion North Staffordshire regiment.
He embarked from Devonport on the 16th March 1917 and disembarkedin Basrah on the 17th May 1917.
There was a crossed out piece on his active sevice form dated the 13th june 1917 stating he was been deprived of a days pay for absence from making 5am parade,MESOPOTAMIA on the 22nd July 1917 he joined the unit in the field and on the 15th September 1918 he died of G.S.wounds and that was all the information on his record I saw at the Archives at Kew.
I did send for a special death certificate for those who lost their lives outside the country,I gave them his details and was so angry to find all they had done was copy my details on the certificate and nothing else.
I remember many years ago reading a small black edged document of my mothers it concerned a death and burial at sea,I am convinced it was about my grandfather.
The 7th North Staffordshires also served in Baku in 1918 with DUNSTERFORCE , I believe my grandfather may have been fighting there.
I have been going to write to the Regiment Museum at Whittington, they did send me some information on Baku and how the troops fought.
Best Wishes Sylvia Rudd (carling )
