«b»Charles Manners, 6th Duke of Rutland«/b» «u»KG «/u» («u»16 May «/u» «u»1815 «/u» – «u»3 March «/u» «u»1888 «/u», «u»Belvoir Castle «/u»), styled «b»Marquess of Granby«/b» before «u»1857 «/u», was an «u»English «/u» «u»Conservative «/u» «u»politician «/u», the son of «u»John Manners, 5thDuke of Rutland «/u» and Lady Elizabeth Howard.
He was educated at «u»Eton «/u», and at «u»Trinity College, Cambridge «/u», earning an «u»MA «/u» in 1835. Entering politics as «u»Member of Parliament «/u» for «u»Stamford «/u», he became known as a voluble, if not particularly talented, «u»protectionist «/u». He briefly held office as a «u»Lord of the Bedchamber «/u» to «u»Prince Albert «/u» from 1843 to 1846.
Following the resignation of «u»Lord George Bentinck «/u» from the «u»leadership «/u» of the protectionists in the «u»British House of Commons «/u» at the beginning of «u»1848 «/u» Granby (as he was then known) became leader on «u»10 February «/u» «u»1848 «/u», as «u»Benjamin Disraeli «/u» was unacceptable to «u»Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby «/u», the overall leader of the party, and the majority of the rank and file. Granby resigned on «u»4 March «/u» «u»1848 «/u», feeling himself inadequate to the post, and the party functioned without an actual leader in the commons for the remainder of the parliamentary session.
At the start of the next session, affairs were handled by the triumvirate of Granby, Disraeli, and «u»John Charles Herries «/u». This confused arrangement ended with Granby's resignation in «u»1851 «/u». He also declined to join the «u»First Derby Ministry «/u» in «u»1852 «/u», and was appointed «u»Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire «/u» instead.
Granby succeeded to the dukedom of Rutland on the death of his father in 1857. He was made a «u»Knight of the Garter «/u» in «u»1867 «/u». He also succeeded his father as «u»Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire «/u», which post he held until his death at the age of 73. He had cherished a passion for «u»Mary Anne Ricketts «/u», later Lady Forester, but his father forbade the two to marry. He was succeeded in the dukedom by his brother «u»John «/u».
