The Visitation of the County Palatine of Lancaster, Made in the Year 1664-5, by Sir William Dugdale , Francis Robert Raines page # 304-307 "Towneley of Towneley."
Towneley family. The Towneley or Townley family are an English recusant family whose ancestry can be traced back to Norman England. They take their name from Towneley Hall in Burnley, Lancashire, which was the family seat until its sale in 1901.
Richard de Towneley (1323-1381) Married Ellen by 1345. High Sheriff of Lancashire from 1374 to 1377. MP for Lancashire in 1361 and 1371.
John Towneley (1350-1399) Married Isabella de Rixton, probably in 1382.
John, the eldest, was born in about 1350 (as he was 31 at the time of Richard's death).[2][5] John was married twice, first to Isabel Rixton, daughter of neighboring landowner William Rixton. John and Isabel had a son, Richard, who inherited Towneley hall upon John's death in 1410, and a daughter, Matilda, who married William Fleming.[2] Isabel died and John de Towneley was remarried to Elizabeth Nagier, who herself died in about 1401.[2]
Robert and Henry de Towneley both became priests, and Alice de Towneley married Edmond Lennard, heir of Sir Thomas Dacre.[2]
