He had an accident to his leg as a baby -- his leg was trapped between the bars of his cot and he was left lame. As he was unfit to be a farmer, he trained as a tailor. He had a tailor's shop at 51 Dublin Road and later at 83 Dublin Road, Belfast. He died in the 'flu epidemic of 1920. Buried Belfast City Cemetery, Glenalina J72. from Maureen (Blick) Harrison: Atkinson RUSSELL joined the Orange Order as a young man. He left it when someone tried to shoot him. Apparently Atkinson was due to take up some position within the Orange Order, and this other person wanted the post for himself. Or did he leave when he became a Christian and joined the Plymouth Brethren? On the Orange order matter : I gather that grandfather was not brought up as a brethren but it was by decision and his choice so there was some other previous involvement with Church of Ireland. So when he had become a christian he was really serious. He chose very heavy study books for his children's SSchool prizes. I do have the one mother got at age 6... 1916.... Grandfather was getting a library together for his own as well as the children's benefit. He must have had a strong conviction to get out of that order. He was pretty strict at home. Mother was whistling a tune she had learnt at school and he sent a message down ..... Tell Helen not to whistle that tune........ He wanted her to sing only for God's praise and glory.
