Jakob Kuik, widower of Grietje (Van der Sluis), b. Koekange, DR, area, / d. Winnipeg, MB, Jan. 1, 104;
JAKOB KUIK
JAKOB KUIK June 20, 1899 - January 1, 2004 Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness (Psalm 115:1) On January 1, 2004, it pleased the Lord to take to himself into his eternal glory our dear father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, Jakob Kuik at the age of 104.
He leaves behind seven children, Margjie, Gerry and his wife Johanna, John and his wife Ardis, Jannie and her husband Len, Jenny and her husband Sy, Bert and his wife Alice, Jake and his wife Rita; as well as 40 grandchildren, 179 great-grandchildren, and 44 great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife of 82 years, Grietje Kuik, in 2001; an infant daughter and son; and by his oldest son, Jan, who died in a concentration camp during the Second World War; also by two sons-in-law, Lefert Meijer and Joe van Dijk; a grandson by marriage, Henk Visscher and two infant great-grandchildren.
Born on June 20, 1899, Dad (or Opa as he was called by most) lived in The Netherlands for the first 50 years of his life. He married Grietje van der Sluis in 1918, and they had 10 children, all born there.
Due to the difficulties they experienced during the Depression of the 1930s, as well as the Second World War and its aftermath, they decided as a family to immigrate to Canada in 1950, settling in Manitoba in the Homewood-Carman area.
From 1955-1965, Dad and Mom farmed in the Graysville district, retiring in 1965 to Carman, where they resided until the early 1990s. For a few years they lived in Winnipeg, but then, because of their advanced age, they became residents of Boyne Lodge in Carman.
In the summer of 2000, Dad and Mom moved to Bethania Personal Care Home in Winnipeg.
Dad was a loving father and grandfather to his family, and an active member of the church. For many years Dad served as an elder in the church, both in The Netherlands and in Canada.
To the end of his life, he enjoyed hearing the psalms and hymns of faith, which he knew by heart, and sang with us as long as he was able.
He was a very hospitable and sociable person, who loved to visit his family and others and to receive visitors. Over the years he and Mom opened their home to countless people, doing what they could to help others.
Dad served his Lord and taught the Word of God to his family. Knowing that he is with his Lord and Saviour is our great comfort. We express our hearfelt thanks to the staff of both Boyne Lodge in Carman and Bethania Personal Care Home in Winnipeg for the excellent and loving care Dad received from them. Viewing will be held on Friday, January 9, 2004 at Doyles Funeral Home in Carman, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. and again prior to the funeral service, which will take place at the Canadian Reformed Church in Carman on Saturday, January 10 at 11:00 a.m., Rev. K. Jonker officiating. Interment at Greenwood Cemetery, Carman. Doyles Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
