Known as John G. Schulting
The Schulting family emigrated from Germany to America in 1860, arriving on the ship Georg at New Orleans, Louisiana, on June 7.
John and Catherine (Engels) Schulting lived in Menominee Township, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, where the family farmed. In 1880, their household there consisted of John, age 34 [sic], farmer; his wife Catherine, age 32, keeping house; and their children, John, age 14; Mary, age 12; Peter, age 9; Catharina, age 7*; Margaret, age 6; Herman, age 4; and Alice [Petronella]; age 1. The Schultings had one more child, Bernard, born in 1882.
* = Catharina's name appears last in the census of the household, out of age order with the other children.
By 1900, Bernard, now age 18, was the only child left in the household with his parents, John, age 58, and Catherine, age 52. Also in the household was Catherine's mother, Petronella Timmermans, a widow, age 81. In 1910, the roles were reversed: Bernard was now listed as head of the household, and his parents, John and Catherine were living in his household.
In 1920, his widow Catherine was living in the household of her son-in-law and daughter, William and Catherine Bauer, inMenominee Township, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, and in 1930, at age 82, Catherine Schulting was listed in the household of her grandson, Aloysius Bauer, in Menominee Township. She died that same year.
