Peter and Petronella (Timmermans) Engels and family emigrated from the Netherlands to the United States in the year 1860, according to the 1910 U.S. census, which records Petronella as well as daughter Catharina as coming to the United States that year.
At the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church Cemetery in Menominee, Illinois, a gravestone for Peter Engels reads that he was born on February 23, 1821,* in Holland, and died on February 8, 1865, and also reads that he was the "Husband of [?.] Timmermans."**
* = This is in variance with the record of his birth in the Netherlands, which has his birth as occurring on January 24, 1821.
** = Only the initial of the first name is given, but it is difficult to determine what the initial is; one reading had suggested A, which would likely stand for Alice; see note below.
Petronella (Timmermans) Engels subsequently Peter Timmermans*, whose date of birth was February 27, 1819 (according to his gravestone at the Menominee cemetery). This was likely Peter Timmermans, born in Grathem, Limburg, Netherlands, son of Joseph and Corneille (Vestjens) Timmermans; his birth record gives his date of birth as February 6, 1819. He emigrated from Neeritter, Limburg, Netherlands, in 1863. Two years later, in 1865, his younger brother and wife, Godfried Timmermans and Sevrina Hubertina Verheijden, also emigrated from Neeritter, and they settled in Paris Township, Grant County, Wisconsin. Grant County, Wis., is directly north of Jo Daviess County, Ill., where Peter lived in Menominee Township.
* = a marriage license for Peter Timmerman and Alice Engles [Engels] was issued on November 3, 1868, in Jo Daviess County, Ill., and this is likely the marriage of Peter Timmermans and Petronella (Timmermans) Engels. The name Petronella seems to have devolved into Alice; not only for this Petronella (Timmermans) Engels but also for her daughter Petronella and for her granddaughter, Petronella Schulting, as well as other Petronellas from Holland who settled in the area.
The 1880 U.S. Census has the Timmermans household in Menominee Township, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, consisting of Peter, age 61, born in Holland, a farmer; his wife Petronella, age 61, born in Holland, keeping house; and son Cornelis, age 28, born in Holland, at home. This son Cornelis was Cornelis Engels, son of Petronella (Timmermans) and her first husband Peter Engels.
Peter Timmermans* died on May 21, 1897, and he was buried in the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church Cemetery in Menominee, Illinois.
* = His surname on the gravestone is given as Timermans.
In 1900, Petronella Timmerman, age 81, born December 1818, a widow, is included is included in the household of her son-in-law John Schulting in Menominee Township, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. John's wife was Petronella's daughter Catharina, born in 1848.
Petronella Timmerman, age 86 years, two months, died on February 7, 1905, and she was buried in the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church Cemetery in Menominee, Illinois. Her gravestone reads she was the "wife of Peter Timmerman."
