Den Bosch News Article 21 Jul 2008 - Bakker D·Äôn Bies overleden (https://www.bd.nl)
ROSMALEN - Jan Verbiesen, former baker in Rosmalen, died at the end of last week at the age of 72. Despite a debilitating illness, he remained well under control in recent years, but recently there was a strong relapse. Verbiesen was a descendant of a classic baker's family and a household name in Rosmalen and the surrounding area. Many knew him as D'n Bies.
Den Bosch News Article 22 Jul 2008 - Jan Verbiesen continued to bring bread home
A baker for whom quality was paramount. But that also strongly attached to good contact with customers. Because of which many in Rosmalen, but also elsewhere in the region, knew him and were allowed to. He was also a passionate chairman of the local racing pigeon club De Zwaluw, and one of the most loyal supporters of football club OJC Rosmalen. It all applies to Jan Verbiesen - also called 'D'n Bies' - who died on Friday, 72 years old.
When a serious illness occurred a few years ago, Jan Verbiesen seemed to have to cease many activities. But he still managed to overcome the problems. Moreover, he kept his tidy character. Family, friends, acquaintances, he stayed with them until the very end, when the disease had taken on a serious form, without self-pity.
Jan Verbiesen was in charge of the bakery trade. Like his grandfather and father, and many other family members did. The Verbiesens also had baker's shops in Den Bosch and Middelrode for a reason. And the customer base included names such as: De Herven nursing home, Bossche police, construction giant Heijmans, Van Lanschot Bankiers. But Jan Verbiesen also emphatically upheld a tradition: bringing bread to customers at home, often including: staying in the neighborhood for a while. In his spare time, he was an enthusiastic pigeon athlete, who as chairman also made a strong case for his association, De Zwaluw. And for sixty years he was affiliated with the football club OJC Rosmalen. Initially as a player, gradually also as a supporter for home and away games. Just as Dutch Defense could continue to count on him. As a reservist, he made sure to be available in the position of lieutenant colonel. In 2001, when he was 65, the bakery ceased to exist. The name D'n Bies, however, lives on in the residential complex that rises on the site of the bakery.
