On his father's death, he received the march of Antwerp and became a vassal of his brother, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godfrey_II,_Duke_of_Lower_Lorraine">Godfrey II, who became duke of Lower Lorraine in 1012. He succeeded his brother in 1023 with the support of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_Henry_II">Emperor Henry II, but was opposed until http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_Conrad_II">Conrad II forced the rebels to submit in 1025. When the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Bar">House of Bar, which ruled in Upper Lorraine, became extinct in 1033, with the death of his cousin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_III,_Duke_of_Upper_Lorraine">Frederick III, Conrad made him duke of both duchies, so that he could assist in the defence of the territory against http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odo_II_of_Blois">Odo II, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Count_of_Blois">count of Blois, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meaux">Meaux, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chartres">Chartres, and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troyes">Troyes (the later http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champagne_%28province%29">Champagne).In the battle at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bar-le-Duc">Bar on 15 November 1037, Gothelo dealt a decisive blow to Odo, who was trying to create an independent state between France and Germany. Odo died in the battle.
Gothelo died on 19 April 1044 and is buried in the Abbey Church of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilzen">Bilzen. His son http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godfrey_III,_Duke_of_Lower_Lorraine">Godfrey succeeded in Upper Lorraine, but the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_Henry_III">Emperor Henry III refused to give him the duchy of Lower Lorraine as well. When Godfrey showed disagreement with the imperial decision, Henry III threatened to pass the duchy to Godfrey's incompetent brother http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothelo_II,_Duke_of_Lower_Lorraine">Gothelo. This caused a long rebellion in Lotharingia between the allies of Godfrey (the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Count_of_Flanders">counts of Flanders and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leuven">Leuven) and imperial forces (1044–1056).

Régelinde, married Albert II († 1063), Earl of Namur : Régelinde dowry the freehold of Durbuy .
Mathilde, married to Sigebaud of Santois († before 1049) and then Henry the Furious († 1061), Count Palatine of Lorraine , who murdered in 1060 .
Gothelon II (probably already dead in 1046), which according to some interpretations of the sources would have succeeded in Lower Lorraine, but you can not remember with certainty the ducal office of Gothelon II. Following the rebel Godfrey the Bearded II , German Emperor Henry III would only have threatened to give the duchy to Gothelon.These are respective marriages Oda and Régilinde that come the claims of the Counts of Leuven and the counts of Namur successor to Godfrey of Bouillon , grand-son of Godfrey II.
