  Hij kwam daar aan op 14 april 1902 met het schip de Statendam.
  
  Jan Top ging in de buurt van Hull in de staat Iowa, een neef Reinder Oostra die gehuwd is met Roelfje Oostra- de Boer
  en zal van daaruit naar elders gegaan zijn.
  Reinder is een zoon van een zus van zijn moeder Barbera.
  
  In Amerika werd Reinder Oostra Reynard genoemd en zijn vrouw Roelfje werd Ruth genoemd.

Er is in 1902 een Jan(Yan) Top geëmigreerd naar de V.S. op 19 jarige leeftijd.
Hij kwam daar aan op 14 april 1902 met het schip de Statendam.

Jan Top zou in de buurt van Hull, Iowa wonen, een neef Reinder Oostra die gehuwd is met Roelfje Oostra- de Boer
en zal van daaruit naar elders gegaan zijn.
Reinder is een zoon van een zus van zijn moeder Barbera.

-volgens "Iowa State Census 1905" woonde John Topp in Baker Township, O'Brien County, Iowa, United States en was en boer daar. Niet bekend is of hij bij iemand werkte als knecht
John Top was hier ineens Topp geworden wat je in verder ook na 1905 tegenkomt.

-Volgens "Census of the United Statess 1910" woonde Jan (John) Top bij de familie Brummel als knecht, kostganger in Welcome, Sioux, Iowa .

In "De Volksvriend"van 19 december 1912 stond het volgende,"John Topp, die een arm moest missen ten gevolge van het werken aan een corn shredder, kwam uit het hospitaal van Rock Valley terug".

Op 17 september 1918 stond John Topp in het "Registra's Report", in het "local Board of the County of Lyon, Iowa, Rock Rapids Lowe.
In het raport staal vermeld dat zijn woonplaats George, Lyon county, Iowa is.
Hierbij staat vermeld dat zijn rechter arm 2 inch onder de elleboog geamputeerd is. Hij zal daar voor behandeling geweestzijn na het ongeluk met de mais-vermaler.
Verder staat hier ook zijn uiterlijk beschreven; Gemiddelde lengte, gemiddeld postuur, grijze ogen en lichtblond haar.
Verder staat er vermeld dat hij schilder en decorateur van beroep was. Werken als landarbeider

-Volgens "Census of the United Statess 1920" op 25 maart huurde John Topp woonruimte bij Will H Grenell waar meerdere mensen op het zelfde woonadres woonde uit verschillende staten.

In de krant, The Rock Rapids Review 05-10-1917, staat het volgende;
“John Topp, of George was in Rock Rapids this week, raising money to enable him to purchase an artificial arm. He lost his right arm in a corn shredder. He raised a little more than $150 in George in a couple of days and expects to get more there. He met with a generous response from the merchants of Rock Rapids. The arm will cost $250, and he will need $50 more for railroad fare and expenses to Kansas City while he is learning to manipulate the arm.”

In de krant, "de Volksvriend" van Orange City, Iowa staat op donderdag 11 maart 1920 het volgende beicht over John Topp.

Onze geachte Corr. te Huil zond' ons het onderstande. met verzoek om het te plaatsen. Allicht heeft zij het aangetroffen in het nieuwsblad harer woonplaats en oordeelt zij verder verspreiding noodzakelijk. Onder het opschrift -Succumbs to Scarlet Fever" meldt de News van George, la., het volgende: John Topp. a painter and decorat- . or, who has been making his home in : George the past 5 or 6 years, died early Sunday morning at the Windsor Hotel where he was rooming. When death came there was no one at his bedside and the last one to see him alive was the attending physician who left him about midnight, Saturday. When the doctor called the next morning, John Topp was dead. During his illness there was no one to take care of him, tho efforts were made to secure a trained nurse, but the Sioux City hospitals were unable to send one here due to the demand for nurses in that city. The body was laid to rest Sunday evening about 5 o'clock in the George cemetery. There was no minister at the grave, and mourners to follow the deceased to his last resting place. If Mr. Topp's parents are living, no one in George seems to know where they live or if he has any brothers or sisters. Rev. A. E. Boell offered to conduet the funeral services, but there was some misunderstanding as to the time of burial and when Rev. Boell arrived at the cemetery the body had been lowered into the grave. Mayor Klinkenburg took up a~collection Monday among the business people to pay the funeral expunses which «mounted to about $70.00"— George News. (Welzeker een droevig voorval. Mogelijk heeft men er niet aan gedacht, dat in een geval als dit de gewenschte hulp kan worden verkregen door middel van het Roode Kruis).

In "The Boyden Reporter from Boyden" is over de begravenis het volgende te geschreven;

March 11, 1920 - The Boyden Reporter from Boyden, Iowa · Page 5 : " John Topp died recently at George and "it seems that during his last illness and burial he was considerably neglected and was buried "like a dog." He was somewhat of a character about town, poor but honest. The Mews, last week contained a nearly two column article on the subject, and although making no excuses foi' the neglect, regrets that there was no agency in George to look after such matters. Perhaps not, but the chances are that in his day John wore a Red Cross button with the rest and if we are not mistaken the Red Cross of Lyon county (and perhaps of George, too) has several thousand dollars in the treasury that have never been spent. But then, the band was not playing when John died"
