HERMANUS (HARRY) P.G. SULKERS April 13, 1920 - August 26, 2005 With fond and loving memories the family sadly announces the passing of Harry Sulkers on August 26, 2005 at Concordia Hospital.
He was predeceased by his parents, Abelina and Jacob Sulkers and infant brother Pieter. He will be sadly missed by his wife Ada, daughter Joycelyn (Eric), granddaughter Caitlyn, sister Win (Mel), nephews and nieces, Bruce, Ross (Marlene), Jacqueline (Jorn), Norma and many dear relatives and friends.
Harry was born and raised on his parents' farm where he lived until his final days. Harry worked alongside his father Jacob for many years on the market garden surrounding the family homestead. He was a farmer true to the heart and continued his father's pride and work growing a variety of Grade A vegetable crops. He was known by many for his sweet corn and Harry's potatoes .
As a young man during the winter months, Harry took up the game of hockey and became one of the finest defensemen in the province. In his junior years he was invited to the Chicago Blackhawks rookie camp, but refused to go because he felt he was needed on the farm. He did however continue playing senior hockey in Manitoba with many teams, winning several championships with the Altona Maroons.
As a player/coach, Harry did not only frustrate the opposition with his defensive abilities, but also outwitted them with his understanding of the game. Following Harry's hockey years, his wife Ada urged him over to the other side of the rink and sparked his interest in curling. Harry took up the challenge and rose through the ranks curling with the Bill McTavish (Sr.) rink. The team enjoyed great success representing the province three times and winning the Canadian Senior Championship in 1973. Square dancing and then round dancing became his next foray.
He and Ada met dear old friends and made many cherished new friends. Summer weekends were spent at Betula Lake where he and Ada camped for over 40 years. Harry became a bit of a local celebrity and no one was safe from his good natured kibitzing. Visitors needed to come prepared with a sharp wit. Harry spent many hours volunteering his time as a coach and as an administrator to bring the games of hockey and curling to many young enthusiasts in the community and make it enjoyable. He will always be remembered for his mischievous grin and the twinkle in his eye. Throughout his life Harry always put family, friends and community first. We will all miss him very much.
