RICHARD (DICK) SULKERS 1925-2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dad on September 26, 2009 at the Minnedosa Health Center. Dad lived to the age of 84 and he has left an irreplaceable void in everyone whose life he touched. Dad died peacefully after a long battle with cancer.
He was predeceased by his brother Albert, wife Jean, son Jim, and companion Margaret Hill. Left to cherish his memory are, his children Don and Linda Scott, his sister Joan (Gordon) Cox, his grandchildren Tracy McNish (Jan), Rachael Sulkers and Nicole Kurtz (Justin), his great-grandchildren Kaleigh, Tegan and Madoc.
Dad will also be dearly missed by Colleen Hockin (Grant) who he considered his other daughter and her children, Tyler and Jennifer, whom kindly referred to him as Papa Dick.
Born and raised in East St. Paul, Dad began to work for the CPR in 1941. In 1943, at the age of 18, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy. Proceeding the War he continued his career with the CPR and transferred to Minnedosa where he later retired in 1984 after working 43 years. Dad enjoyed countless years of volunteer service for a wide range of organizations; he served as the President of The Royal Canadian Legion in Minnedosa and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 1995. He was also very devoted to The Elks organization and served as Past Ruler Exalted.
Dad had a passion for life which was conveyed through his devotion to family, his love for gardening, his passion for travelling and his adoration for adventure. Whether he was para-sailing with his grandchildren, tending to his garden, enjoying a round of golf or spending his winters basking in the Florida sun, Dad always filled his days with enthusiasm. A proud father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather he will be deeply missed. He will always be in our hearts and we are forever grateful to have had him in our lives. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Minnedosa Health Center for their care and compassion during dad's final days. A special thank you from the family goes to Susan and Evelyn for both recognizing Dad's need for extra care, and for their assistance in fulfilling our father's final wish. In hopes of helping to find a cure for cancer, Dad courageously gave his body to the University of Manitoba for anatomical research.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3E OV9 A memorial service was held on October 2, 2009 in Minnedosa, MB.
