Notes par consul Flavius Syagrius Afrianus

This, as well as the other Roman ancestors listed here, are speculative.

Flavius Afranius Syagrius (b. ca 345) was a Roman politician and administrator and was the father of Syagria, the mother of Tonantius Ferreolus. He was of paternal Roman descent as a Gallo-Roman Senator. He became proconsul of Africa in 379, praefectus Urbis Romae in 381, praefectus praetorio Italiae in 382 and was consul with Flavius Claudius Antonius in 382.

Afranius was the family name, and Syagrius was a cognomen meaning "wild boar." He was buried in Lyon, France, then Lugdunum, beneath an imposing monument at the city gate, "not quite a full bowshot" from the church, and a statue of him was erected in the city.

Hewas the father of Syagria, clarissima femina (?), born c. 390, married to Ferreolus, born c. 390, and thus maternal grandfather of Tonantius Ferreolus.

He was also most likely the ancestor of Afranius Aegidius and his son Afranius Syagrius, as well as a relative of his predecessor Flavius Syagrius, Consul in 381, who was a friend and correspondent of Symmachus, the noted orator and vigorous defender of the pagan religion.

He has long been a subject of debate for those attempting to trace the Carolingian dynasty of France, as well as their numerous descendants, from antiquity. All of these attempts include many speculative and hypothetical connections, rather than being historically documented.

He was Gallo-Roman Senator, and Consul of Rome (382).

Kelley (1947) investigated the connection of Charlemagne to Syagrius in detail. He used a 9th century pedigree of Charlemagne, but rejected its clearly incorrect claim that Arnulf de Metz was the son of Arnoald de Metz. He also drew on various saints' lives. Kelley now concurs with Settipani's revised version of that pedigree. Jarnut has also explored this connection (1986, pp. 14-22).

Syagrius was of paternal Roman descent,as evidenced by the fact he was a Senator. His name follows the traditional Roman trinomina format of praenomen, nomen and cognomen, where the nomen is the surname. His cognomen, Syagrius, means wildboar (Moriarty 1956). His praenomen, Flavius, became a popular given name from the time of the Flavian dynasty, but was also used as a courtesy title (Bagnall, et al. 1987, pp. 36 ff.).

There were two different consuls named Syagrius in two successive years, 381 and 382. Each of these two Syagrii held a number of offices besides that of Consul. Determining which office goes with which Syagrius is somewhat difficult. The consul of 381 was a friend and correspondent of Symmachus, the noted orator and vigorous defender of the pagan religion. The consul of 382 was probably the one who was the maternal grandfather of Tonantius Ferreolus.

This Syagrius seems to have served as Proconsul Africae (379), Praefectus Urbis Romae (381), Consul of Rome (382) and Praefectus Praetorio Italiae (382). The Consul of 382 was selected by the Emperor Gratian and served with Antonius. The office of consul had great prestige and was eagerly sought by Roman citizens. In the second half of the 4th century it was usually attained as the culmination of a distinguished career, but it had become largely honorary, with minimal political responsibilities.

He was a poet, and he might have been the Syagrius who was a pupil and friend of the poet Ausonius. Ausonius was the head of a famous school at Bordeaux, and was selected by emperor Valentinian as tutor for his son (the future emperor) Gratian. A number of his relatives and friends held various high imperial offices (Van Dam 1985, p. 304).

He was buried beneath an imposing monument at the city gate of Lyons, "not quite a full bowshot" from the church, and a statue of him was erected in the city.

From the Wikipedia page of Flavius Afranius Syagrius:

Flavius Afranius Syagrius (floruit 369-382) was a Roman politician and administrator.

Life

Afranius' father was Clodoreius; it is unknown who his mother was.

Afranius was also a member of the Gallic-Roman aristocratic family of the Syagrii, which originated in Lyon.

In the same years in which Afranius lived, another Syagrius is attested (he wasconsul in 381), but it is not always possible to distinguish the career of the two Syagri.

In 369 he is attested as notarius: in that year the Roman Emperor Valentinian I removedhim from his office after a failed military operation, and Afranius dedicated himself to private life.

He continued his career under Emperor Gratian, possibly because of his friendship with the poet Ausonius.

Afranius was magister memoriae in 379, when some Theodorus succeeded him. However, that same year he became Proconsul of Africa.

Between June 18, 380, and the Spring of 382 he is attested as Praetorian prefect of Italy.

In 381 he was also praefectus urbi of Rome and Consul in 382 .

SYAGRIUS (d. 487), the last ofthe independent Roman administrators of Gaul, was the son of Aegidius, who had seized Gaul while Ricimer was master of Italy. From 464 to 486 he governed that part of Gaul which lies between the Maas, the Scheldt and the Seine, and was termed "king of the Romans" by the German invaders, Franks, Burgundians and Visigoths, who already occupied the rest of Gaul. Defeated in 486 by Clovis, king of the Salian Franks, at the battle of Soissons, Syagrius fled, leaving his land at the mercy of the Franks. He sought refuge with Alaric II., king of the Visigoths, at Toulouse, but Alaric imprisoned him instead of granting him refuge, and delivered him up to Clovis. He was executed in 487, secretly and by the sword, according to Gregory of Tours.
