Enfant(s):
nREF: 1820 Sumpter Co., South Carolina census.
Although we have no proof, John Steadham listed in the 182 0 Sumpter Co., South
Carolina census is the most logical candidate to be the so n of Zachariah [171]
Stidham, Jr. Zachariah [172] had four known sons (Ref: 180 0 Edgefield Co.,
South Carolina census). We know the names of three: Zacha riah [295] Stidham
3rd, James Howard [295b] Stidham and Adam [295f] Stidham.
This may be John Steadham (no age given) listed in the 186 0 Early Co., Georgia
census, residing in Octavia, Georgia and born in North Caro lina.
Two of his sons were probably Samuel Steadham (b. ca 1802 , South Carolina), and
David Steadham (b ca 1817, South Carolina), both enumerate d in the 1840 and
1850 Sumpter Co., South Carolina census. Samuel was liste d as head of
household in the 1830 Sumpter Co., South Carolina census . Another son is
believed to be the William J. Steadham (b. ca 1819, South C arolina) who may not
have been born at the time of the 1820 census. However, Wi lliam J. was also
listed in the 1840 and 1850 Sumpter Co., South Carolina cen sus.
The above mentioned Samuel [463a], David [463d], and Willia m J. [463e] are
listed as "probable" sons of John [295c] Stidham due to the ir residency in
Sumpter Co., South Carolina. We have no proof at this time.
Joseph E. Steadman Sr. (deceased), in a letter to Fannie Le wis dated 27
February 1964, claimed the John Steadham of Sumpter Count y was a son of John
[187] Stedham Sr. of Mississippi Territory (southern Alabam a). John Stedham
Sr. went to Sumpter Co., South Carolina ca 1819.
