1 Chapter One SCHOLTEN ORIGINATION LUYDER ALEFSON
The record of the family begins in 1634, during the Thirty Years War (1618-48) in Germany. Luyder Alefsen with bag and baggage, loaded on a couple of cows, fled a village called Epe, Westphalen, Germany, for the relative safety of Gelre (now called Gelderland), The Netherlands. There he settled in Vorden where he met and married an attractive farmers daughter Stiene (Christina) Derksen Driessen Berenpas, the widow of Tuenis Berenpas. They lived on the Berenpas farm, which stood even then, as now, between Vorden and Ruurlo, to the right lane toward Wiersse.
Luyder and Christina were married on June of 1636, in Vorden, The Netherlands. There four of their six children were born, (three known) Daniel in October 1643, Derk who was born between 1645
and 1654, and Harmen in March 1655.
