Peter II of Courtenay
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter of Courtenay (French: Pierre de Courtenay, died 1219) was emperor of the Latin Empire of Constantinople from 1216-1217.

He was a son of Peter of Courtenay (d. 1183), the youngest son of Louis VI of France and his second Queen consort Adélaide de Maurienne. His mother was Elizabeth of Courtenay.

Peter first married Agnes of Nevers, via whom he obtained the three counties of Nevers, Auxerre, and Tonnerre. He took for his second wife, Yolanda of Flanders (d. 1219), a sister of Baldwin and Henry of Flanders, who were afterwards the first and second emperors of the Latin Empire of Constantinople. Peter accompanied his cousin, King Philip Augustus, on the crusade of 1190 and fought (alongside his brother Robert) in the Albigensian Crusade in 1209 and 1211, when he took part in the siege of Lavaur. He was present at the Battle of Bouvines in 1214.

When his brother-in-law, the emperor Henry, died without sons in 1216, Peter was chosen as his successor, and with a small army set out from France to take possession of his throne. Consecrated emperor at Rome, in a church outside the walls, by Pope Honorius III on April 9, 1217, he borrowed some ships from the Venetians, promising in return to conquer Durazzo for them; but he failed in this enterprise, and sought to make his way to Constantinople by land. On the journey he was seized by the despot of Epirus, Theodore Komnenos Doukas, and, after an imprisonment of two years, died, probably by foul means. Peter thus never governed his empire, which, however, was ruled for a time by his wife, Yolanda, who had succeeded in reaching Constantinople. Two of his sons, Robert and Baldwin, in turn held the throne of the Latin Empire.

[edit] Children
By his first wife Agnes of Nevers he had one child, Mahaut de Courtenay (Maud, Matilda, d. 1254), countess of Nevers, Auxerre and Tonerre.

By his second wife Yolanda of Flanders, he had 10 children:

Philip (d. 1226), Marquis of Namur, who declined the offer of the crown of the Latin Empire
Robert of Courtenay (d. 1228), Latin Emperor
Henry (d. 1229), Marquis of Namur
Baldwin II of Constantinople (d. 1273)
Margaret, Marchioness of Namur, who married first Raoul d'Issoudun and then Henry count of Vianden
Elizabeth, who married Walter count of Bar and then Eudes sire of Monta
Yolanda, who married Andrew II of Hungary
Eleanor, who married Philip of Montfort, Lord of Tyre
Marie de Courtenay, who married Theodore I Lascaris of the Empire of Nicaea
Agnes, who married Geoffrey II Villehardouin, Prince of Achaea

Emperor-elect of Byzantium, Lord of Courtenay, Maruis de Namur and Count of Nevers, Auxerre, and Tonnerre; took part in the Third Crusade 1190, present at Battle of Bouvines 1214 when Philip Augustus of France defeated an army sent by King John of England to reconquer the lands previously held by the Angevins, elected Latin Emperor of Byzantium by the Frankish nobles of that city 1216 and crowned by the Pope in Rome, but captured on his way to the East 1217 by order of Theodore Angelus, Despot of Epirus, and put to death 1219, having never set foot in the city (of Constantinople), let alone reigned there. [Burke's Peerage]
Pierre is also styled as Emporer of Constantinople, Compte de Courtena y, de Nevers, d'Auxerre et de Tonnerre and Marquis de Namur. In 1217 , Pierre was made Emperor of Constantinople, following his brothers-in -law, Baldwin VI - Count of Hainault and Flanders, and Henry. In Apri l of that year he was crowned by Pope Honorius III and set out to defe at Theodore Comnenius, Emperor of Thessalonica. After uncessfully att empting to take Epirus, which he had promised to the Venetians, in ret urn for their help, he was attacked on all sides when he reached the m ountains of Albania and was subsequently slain, probably by order of C omenenius.

Pierre II de Courtenay was the son of Pierre I de France & Élisabeth de Courtenay

Pierre was the Latin emperor of Constantinople, from 1217 to 1219.

He was a grandson of the French king Louis VI, and obtained the counties of Auxerre and Tonnerre by his first marriage. His second wife, Yolande, was sister of Baldwin I and Henry of Flanders, first and second Latin emperors of Constantinople. She brought him the marquessate of Nevers.

Pierre accompanied his cousin, King Philip Augustus, on the crusade of 1190 and fought (alongside his brother Robert) in the Albigensian Crusade in 1209 and 1211, when he took part in the siege of Lavaur. He was present at the Battle of Bouvines in 1214.

Pierre was chosen successor to his brother-in-law, Henry of Flanders when Henry died without sons in 1216, and with a small army set out from France to take possession of his throne. Pierre was consecrated emperor in the church of San Lorenzo Fuori le Mura, Rome, by Pope Honorius III on April 9, 1217. Accompanied by an army and a papal legate, he subsequently embarked at Brindisi on ships furnished by the Venetians, for whom he tried to conquer Durazzo from Theodore Ducas, Greek despot of Epirus. Failing in that enterprise, Pierre then set out overland toward Thessalonica. In the mountains near Elbasan, he was taken by Theodore. After an imprisonment of two years, he died, probably by foul means.

Pierre thus never governed his empire, which, however, was ruled for a time by his wife, Yolanda, who had succeeded in reaching Constantinople. Two of his sons, Robert and Baldwin, in turn held the throne of the Latin Empire.
