There are several intriguing aspects to his life. His origins were in the well established Halbertsma family of Grouw; his father was a member of the provicial legislation of Frisland; his uncles were Eeltje Hiddes Halbertsma, physician and well-known author (among other things of the Frisian national anthem), and Joost Hiddes Halbertsma, also an author and Protestant minister. It appears that in the beginning of the 1850's there were some problems. In Novmber 1853 there is a public sale of his property in Grouw (notariele akte 176, notaris Witteveen from Metslawier). According to the document, he had a farm "onder de modder in Grouw" - inspection of the map of Grouw and surrounding region suggests that reference is made here to "Modderwier", a farm (Frisian: "state") which in 1859 belongs to Claas Ates Sjollema, who inherits this from his mother, Reinskjen Aukes van der Goot (who was Eeltje's stepmother).
He then moves, with family, to Nes, Westdongeradeel (where his wife was born). They have another two children in Nes; he establishes himself as a butter merchant. Whatever problems he "fled" from in Grouw may have resurfaced, because on November 28, 1857, we find another public sale, this time in Nes, and this time involving the contents of a warehouse as well as the store and house. The properties are registered in the land registry as numbers 865 and 866 in Nes, section B. Although the notariele akte states that he is living in Nes, he has already left; his agent for the public sale is Pieter Gerrits Dijkstra, merchant in Nes, and also his brother-in-law .
It is quite clear that he left for the United States. Several sources give incorrect and misleading information.Sjollema mentions a "vlucht" to the United States; in early versions of the Sjollema website it is suggested that Eeltje Tjallings Halbertsma fled to the United States from Grouw in 1854. This is pertinently incorrect: we do find Eeltje Tjallings Halbertsma with wife and several children in the population register in Nes,Westdongeradeel; this source indicates that he left in 1857 to emigrate to Lancaster, Erie County, New York. Byskrift 28 gives 1858;
Bevolkingsregister(Population Register) Westdongeradeel shows that his file was closed in 1857 - presumably he left Westdongeradeel in 1857. There is an entry on a passenger list for the Roger A. Hiern, from Antwerpen, for an Elsye Tjalings Halbertsma (female), arriving in New York on 26-10-1857. Line 15 microfilm serial M237 Roll M237-180 (seen 061110).
While there are some disagrements (name, sex) there are too many agreements to ignore this record:
departure in 1857 (there are no other Halbertsma's leaving Friesland in 1857);
patronym Taling is quite similar to Tjallings.
The emigration records in Friesland indicate that his destination was "Lancaster, Erie county, New York". That was the town in which his parents-in-law, Gerrit Jans Dijkstra and Saakje Schregardus, had settled in 1849. However, there is no indication that he ever made it to Lancaster. Three years later, he is in Michigan.
There is an entry in the 1860 census for Pere Marquette, Michigan, for an Eli Hulbertson, who works as a farm labourer, boarding with two other persons.
He then shows up as Eli B. Halbertsma as a private in the US Infantry for Illinois, from Niles (Cook County). Musters 27-8-1864, musters out June 9, 1865.
Next he shows up in the 1870 Michigan census as Eli Albur or Albeer, age 45 or 48, working in sawmill, residence Saugatuck village, Allegan county, MI. He boards with several people all born in the Netherlands (Edward Spiker; John Visser; Gert Paul(?); John Mart(?). Cornelis Warnshout(?) aged 28 married to Phoebe age 25. All the men work in the sawmill.
In the 1880 census he shows up in Ludington, Mason county, at 678 Second Street: Eli Halbulsma age 58, widowed.It should be noted that at that time his wife, left behind in the Netherlands, is still alive. According to Sjollema, she lives with her son, Tjalling Eeltjes Halbertsma, in Ternaard, where he is school principal. In the 1880 census, Eeltje's occupation is listed as retail grocer. His neighbour is Louis Peterson, age 36, widowed, born in Norway, who works in a saw mill. In Ludington he marries Jacomina Scholl who, according to LDS, was born in Milbau, Baden. I have been unable to locate a place named Milbau in Baden or anywhere else in Germany.
Jacomina Scholl dies as Jacobina Halbertsma in Chicago, Cook County, IL on Sep 26 1909 at the age of 66 years.
