He was king of Skane when Ingjald, The Wicked, was king of the Swedes at Uppsala. He had confronted King Ingjald which caused Ingjald to commit suicide by burning himself and others in his own hall.

!King of Skane when Ingjald the Wicked (of the Yngling line) was king of the Swedes at Uppsala. Ingjald had widened his kingdom by slaying 12 kings, all of them treacherously. Confronted with the wrath of Ivar he withdrew into his hall with his daughter and people, and when the company was dead drunk he had fire laid to it, so that they all perished. According to Ynglinga Saga, this
pyromanic imbecility cost the Ynglings their realm of Uppsala, and future kings of Sweden and Denmark came of the line of Ivar, though what Ivar could be except another Yngling is hard to say. We hear that he now conquered Sweden and came to possess all Denmark. Also he won for himself a large part of Germany, the entire Austrriki (presumably the lands east of the Baltic, including a little of Russia), and the fifth part of England -- a traditional description of Northumbria. == Synopsis ==

Ivar Vidfamne or Ívarr inn víðfaðmi (Ivar the Wide-Fathoming) was a Danish and Swedish king hailing from Scania. He may have died c. 700.[1] According to the Heimskringla and the Hervarar saga, Ivar was also the king of Norway, Denmark, Saxony and parts of England.

Ivar in the Sagas

He began as king of Scania and conquered Sweden by defeating Ingjald Illråde. He is then said to have conquered all of Scandinavia and parts of England. Because of his harsh rule, many Swedes fled west and populated Värmland under its king Olof Trätälja. His last campaign was in North Eastern Europe where he died, defeated by Odin in disguise. (Another source claims he took his life by drowning himself in the Gulf of Finland.)

According to both Ynglinga saga and Sögubrot, his homeland was Scania, but according to the Ynglinga saga, he had to flee Scania when his uncle Guðröðr of Scania had slain his father Halfdan the Valiant. The Ynglinga saga, Historia Norvegiæ, Hervarar saga and Upplendinga Konungum tell that Ivar conquered Sweden after Ingjald's suicide, and later returned to take Denmark.

According to Hversu Noregr byggdist and Njal's Saga, he was the son of Halfdan the Valiant (also given as his father in the Ynglinga saga and the Hervarar saga), son of Harald the Old, son of Valdar, son of Roar (Hroðgar) of the house of Skjöldung (Scylding). According to Hversu, Njal's saga, the Lay of Hyndla and Sögubrot, Ivar had a daughter named Auðr the Deep-Minded.

Sögubrot relates that when Ivar was the king of Sweden, he gave his daughter Auðr the Deep-Minded to king Hrœrekr slöngvanbaugi of Zealand, in spite of the fact that she wanted to marry Hrœrek's brother Helgi the Sharp. Hrœrekr and Auðr had the son Harald Wartooth. Ivar made Hrœrekr kill his brother Helgi, and after this, he attacked and killed Hrœrekr. However, Auðr arrived with the Zealand army and chased her father Ivar back to Sweden. The following year, Auðr went to Gardariki with her son Harald and many powerful men and married its king Raðbarðr. This was the opportunity for Ivar to conquer Zealand.

The Hervarar saga does not mention any daughter named Auðr. Instead it mentions an Alfhild. Ivar gave her to Valdar whom Ivar made subking of Denmark.

However, when Ivar learnt that Auðr had married without his permission, he marshalled a great leidang from Denmark and Sweden and went to Gardariki. He was very old at the time. However, when they had arrived at the borders of Raðbarð's kingdom, Karelia (Karjálabotnar), he threw himself overboard. Harald then returned to Scania to become its ruler. In the Lay of Hyndla, Ivar, Auðr, Hrœrekr and Harald appear. Raðbarðr also appears, but there is no information about his relationship with them.

Ivar Vidfamne var en nordisk sagokung vars existens inte är historiskt belagd, men vilken förekommer i ett flertal isländska sagor.

Vidfamne skall från början ha varit kung av Skåne. Enligt Snorre Sturlasson blev han sedermera även kung av Svitjod, samt av Norge, Danmark, Finland, Saxland, Kurland, Estland, Gårdarike och norra England, det vill säga Northumbria. Han skall ha erövrat sveaväldet efter innebränningen av Ingjald Illråde, och sedan ha underlagt sig alla kustländerna kring Östersjön och Nordsjön. Vidfamne omnämns dock inte i Saxo Grammaticii Gesta Danorum, där Sigurd Ring, utan mellanleden Vidfamne och Harald Hildetand, efterträder Ingjald Illråde som kung.

Vidfamne var enligt berättelserna son till Halvdan Snälle av Skjöldungaätten, och enligt Hervararsagan var han, på sin mors sida, ättling till en östgotisk kungasläkt. Han var gift med en dotter till Heidrek av Småland (son till Agantyr, kung i Småland). Han var far till Aud Djupaudga (gift först med Hrörek av Lejre och sedan med Radbart av Gårdarike). I Danmark satte han enligt den sägenhistoriska Sögubrot sin dotters make Hrörek till underkonung men lät senare dräpa honom. Därefter gjorde han Valdar till kung.

Ivar Vidfamne skall ha omkommit (kastades i vattnet och drunknade) på en härfärd till Gårdarike då han blev ordentligt uppläxad för sin grymhet, svekfullhet och makthunger, av sin egen fosterfar Hord. Han kastade sig i havet efter sin fosterfar, men kom aldrig mer upp. Äldre forskning, bland annat av Birger Nerman, påstod att Ivar skulle vara höglagd på Valsgärde, i den näst äldsta gravhögen som daterats till slutet av 600-talet, utanför Uppsala.[1][2] Idag har man gått ifrån dessa antaganden, och bland annat Riksantikvarieämbetet fastslår att vi inte vet vilka som blivit begravda där.[3]

Frans G. Bengtsson gjorde sin romanhjälte Röde Orm till ättling av Ivar Vidfamne.

Ivar Vidfavne.

"Vidfadme" betyder "den, som favner bredt" og hentyder til, at han blev konge af både Danmark, vistnok af Sverige (hvis ikke det var hans søn som blev konge af Sverige), dele af Rusland og måske det nordøstlige England.

Yngve-Frej er en sammenblanding af to forskellige stamfædre. Før Sveriges erobring regnedes guden Frej for at være de svenske kongers stamfar, men derefter var det Ivar/Yngve, som regnedes for at være stamfar til alle de senere svenske konger. Disse to forskellige stamfædre er i traditionen med tiden blevet smeltet sammen, ved at Ivar er blevet gjort identisk med guden Frej.

kung över Nordens första storrike. Uppges vara född på Ivön i Villands härad, som son till Halfdan Snjælle. Det råder olika uppfattningar om under vilken tidsrymd Ivar Vidfavne kan ha levt, allt från 600-talets början till 700-talets slut, men om man sätter sin tilltro till Snorre Sturlasson som jämsides nämner kungar i Tyskland, England och Frankrike, om vilka vi har säkrare uppgifter, kan 700-talets slut vara Ivar Vidfavnes levnadstid.

Ivar berättas ha befunnit sig i Northumberland när han underrättades om dråpet på sin far, och genast vänt hem till Skåne, för att ta landet i besittning. Härifrån startade han också hämndkriget mot Ingjald Illråde och dennes dotter Åsa. Det hela ändade med att Ingjald och Åsa lät bränna sig inne för att inte hamna i Ivars Vidfavnes händer, och att Ivar därefter lade hela Sveaväldet under sig. Hans välde utökades också snart med övriga Danaväldet och en stor del av Saxland (norra Tyskland) och de baltiska kustländerna (som då kallades för "Österriket"). Dessutom var han sedan tidigare även kung över Northumberland i England; - således ett dåtida nordiskt storrike utan motstycke i historien!

Ivar Vidfavnes dotter Aud berättas ha varit gift med lydkungen Hrørek i Lejre, och i detta äktenskap föddes sonen Harald, som senare skulle bli berömd under tillnamnet Hildetand. Det berättas, att sedan Ivar dräpt sin svärson skjoldungakungen Hrørek, flydde Aud med sin son till Gårdarike, där hon gifte sig med kung Randver.

När Ivar så fått kännedom om detta, sägs han ha blivit mycket vred och avseglat österut med sin flotta. Under sin härfärd mot Gårdarike skall han ha träffat sin fosterfar Horder i Karelen vid Finska Viken. Horder sägs här ha uppläxat Ivar Vidfavne för hans grymhet, svekfullhet och makthunger. Ivar skall då ha blivit så upprörd, att han sprungit överbord mot Horders skepp för att försöka komma åt denne. Han missade emellertid språnget och hamnade i vattnet och drunknade. Efter Ivar Vidfavnes död splittrades också det första storriket i Nordens historia.

According to Hversu Noregr byggdist and Njal's Saga, he was the son of Halfdan the Valiant (also given as his father in the Ynglinga saga and the Hervarar saga), son of Harald the Old, son of Valdar, son of Roar (Hroðgar) of the house of Skjöldung (Scylding). According to Hversu, Njal's saga, the Lay of Hyndla and Sögubrot, Ivar had a daughter named Auðr the Deep-Minded.

Sögubrot relates that when Ivar was the king of Sweden, he gave his daughter Auðr the Deep-Minded to king Hrærekr slöngvanbaugi of Zealand, in spite of the fact that she wanted to marry Hrærek's brother Helgi. Hrærekr and Auðr had the son Harald Wartooth. Ivar made Hrærekr kill his brother Helgi, and after this, he attacked and killed Hrærekr. However, Auðr arrived with the Zealand army and chased her father Ivar back to Sweden. The following year, Auðr went to Gardariki with her son Harald and many powerful men and married its king Radbart. This was the opportunity for Ivar to conquer Zealand.

The Hervarar saga does not mention any daughter named Auðr. Instead it mentions an Alfhild. Ivar gave her to Valdar whom Ivar made subking of Denmark.

However, when Ivar learnt that Auðr had married without his permission, he marshalled a great leidang from Denmark and Sweden and went to Gardariki. He was very old at the time. However, when they had arrived at the borders of Radbart's kingdom, Karelia (Karjálabotnar), he threw himself overboard. Harald then returned to Scania to become its ruler. In the Lay of Hyndla, Ivar, Auðr, Rörek and Harald appear. Radbart also appears, but there is no information about his relationship with them.

In later time it became exclusively female. There is a male Audr in the Norse mythology, but a female one was one of the settlers of Iceland around 900. She came from Ireland, so maybe she had an Irish name that sounded somewhat similar to Audr, so Audr was used for her even though it was male. I don't know about that, just wondering. There is a Audr Ivarsdottir mentioned in the poem Hyndluljod as mother of Haraldr hilditonn Hraereksson and Randver Radbardsson. That poem is written in Iceland in the twelfth century, so the poet might not have any better idea of who Audr was than we do. Ivarr Vídfadmi Hálfdanarson, King of the Danes and Swedes was the son of Hálfdan Snälle Haraldsson, King of Roeskilde and Maolda (?). Ivarr Vídfadmi Hálfdanarson, King of the Danes and Swedes went to Scania after the death of his uncle Gudrod, and collected an army in all haste, and moved with it into Sweden where he hoped to avenge the death's of his uncle and father at the hands of Ingjalds daughter Aasa.4 He subdued the whole of Sweden, he brought in subjection to himself all the Danish dominions, a great deal of Saxland, all the East Country, and a fifth part of England, for this he became known as the "Wide Reacher" for so expanding his kingdom.4 Ivarr Vídfadmi Hálfdanarson, King of the Danes and Swedes also went by the name of Ivar "the Wide-Reacher". King of the Danes at Roskilde, Denmark, between 588 and 647.5 He was the successor of King of the Swedes Óláfr Trételgju Ingjaldsson; King of the Swedes.6 Ivarr Vídfadmi Hálfdanarson, King of the Danes and Swedes was began to bring his army against the wicked king of Skåne, Ingjald Illråd and surrounded Ingjald's great hall on Lake Mälen in which Ingjald perished when he burned down his own palace around him and his daughter circa 623 at Lake Mälaren, Uppsala, Sweden.4 King of the Swedes at Uppsala, Sweden, between 630 and 647.6 He married Gyrita of Jutland.7 Ivarr Vídfadmi Hálfdanarson, King of the Danes and Swedes witnessed the death of Prince of Lejre Rörik Skjölding before 647; He was killed by Oda's father, Ivar, in revenge for Rurik's killing of Oda's lover, Helge. Ivarr Vídfadmi Hálfdanarson, King of the Danes and Swedes was the son of Hálfdan Snälle Haraldsson, King of Roeskilde and Maolda (?). Ivarr Vídfadmi Hálfdanarson, King of the Danes and Swedes went to Scania after the death of his uncle Gudrod, and collected an army in all haste, and moved with it into Sweden where he hoped to avenge the death's of his uncle and father at the hands of Ingjalds daughter Aasa.4 He subdued the whole of Sweden, he brought in subjection to himself all the Danish dominions, a great deal of Saxland, all the East Country, and a fifth part of England, for this he became known as the "Wide Reacher" for so expanding his kingdom.4 Ivarr Vídfadmi Hálfdanarson, King of the Danes and Swedes also went by the name of Ivar "the Wide-Reacher". His boat sank and he drowned in the frigid waters of the Gulf of Finland.8,9 He was the predecessor of King of the Danes and Swedes Harold Hildetand Röriksson; King of the Swedes.6 Ivarr Vídfadmi Hálfdanarson, King of the Danes and Swedes was the predecessor of King of the Danes and Swedes Harold Hildetand Röriksson; King of the Danes.5

Ívarr inn víðfaðmi or Ivar Vidfamne was a legendary king of Sweden and oth
er parts of Scandinavia. He may have died ca. 700.[1] According to the Hei
mskringla and the Hervarar saga, Ivar was also the king of Norway, Denmar
k, Saxony and parts of England.

The Hervarar saga tells that Ivar Vidfamne made Valdar the viceroy of Denmark and gave him his daughter Alfhild. When Valdar died, his son Randver became the king of Denmark, while his son Harald Wartooth became the king of Götaland or Gotland. In the Hervarar saga, he also appears in a poem together with other kings and nations

Ívarr inn víðfaðmi or Ivar Vidfamne was a semi-legendary king of Sweden c. 655- c.695, and according to the Heimskringla and the Hervarar saga also the king of Norway, Denmark, Saxony and parts of England.

He began as king of Scania and conquered Sweden by defeating Ingjald Illråde. He is then said to have conquered all of Scandinavia and parts of England. Because of his harsh rule, many Swedes fled west and populated Värmland under its king Olof Trätälja. His last campaign was in Russia where he died, defeated by Odin in disguise. (Another source claims he took his life by drowning himself in the Gulf of Finland
According to both Ynglinga saga and Sögubrot, his homeland was Scania, but according to the Ynglinga saga, he had to flee Scania when his uncle Guðröðr of Scania had slain his father Halfdan the Valiant. The Ynglinga saga, Historia Norvegiæ, Hervarar saga and Upplendinga Konungum tell that Ivar conquered Sweden after Ingjald's suicide, and later returned to take Denmark.

According to Hversu Noregr byggdist and Njal's Saga, he was the son of Halfdan the Valiant (also given as his father in the Ynglinga saga and the Hervarar saga), son of Harald the Old, son of Valdar, son of Roar (Hroðgar) of the house of Skjöldung (Scylding). According to Hversu, Njal's saga, the Lay of Hyndla and Sögubrot, Ivar had a daughter named Auðr the Deep-Minded.

Sögubrot relates that when Ivar was the king of Sweden, he gave his daughter Auðr the Deep-Minded to king Hrœrekr slöngvanbaugi of Zealand, in spite of the fact that she wanted to marry Hrœrek's brother Helgi the Sharp. Hrœrekr and Auðr had the son Harald Wartooth. Ivar made Hrœrekr kill his brother Helgi, and after this, he attacked and killed Hrœrekr. However, Auðr arrived with the Zealand army and chased her father Ivar back to Sweden. The following year, Auðr went to Gardariki with her son Harald and many powerful men and married its king Raðbarðr. This was the opportunity for Ivar to conquer Zealand.

The Hervarar saga does not mention any daughter named Auðr. Instead it mentions an Alfhild. Ivar gave her to Valdar whom Ivar made subking of Denmark.

However, when Ivar learnt that Auðr had married without his permission, he marshalled a great leidang from Denmark and Sweden and went to Gardariki. He was very old at the time. However, when they had arrived at the borders of Raðbarð's kingdom, Karelia (Karjálabotnar), he threw himself overboard. Harald then returned to Scania to become its ruler. In the Lay of Hyndla, Ivar, Auðr, Hrœrekr and Harald appear. Raðbarðr also appears, but there is no information about his relationship with them
