Nanthild
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nanthild (c.610 – 642) (also known as Nantéchilde, Nanthechilde, Nanthildis, Nanthilde, or Nantechildis) was the third of many wives of Dagobert I, king of the Franks (629-639).

She was of Saxon lineage, born about 608 or 610. The Lexikon des Mittelalters calls her ein Mädchen aus dem Dienstpersonal ("a maiden of the royal [ Austrasian] household"). Her elevation to consort may have given importance to her relatives: her brother Lanthegisel was an important landowner in the Limousin and a relation of Aldegisel. Dagobert set aside his wife Gomatrud to marry her, ca. 629; to her was born Clovis II, second eldest of Dagobert's surviving sons and the one who succeeded him in Neustria and Burgundy. After Dagobert's death in January 639, she was initially regent for her son, accompanied by Ega, mayor of the Neustrian palace and an opponent of the powerful contingent of nobles headed by the Burgundofarones, whose seat was at Meaux.

In the interest of reducing noble Burgundian independence of the Merovingian palace, she married her niece Ragnoberta to the Frank Flaochad and had the magnates and bishops of the realm of Burgundy acclaim him mayor of the palace at Orléans in 642. Soon she died at Landry in Burgundy, where she had long resided; her body was translated to the Saint Denis Basilica. Her untimely death allowed her son to fall under the influence of the nobility, who abhorred a strong royal hand.

Name: Dagobert I King Of Austrasia 1 2
Sex: M
Birth: ABT 602 in Neustria, France
Death: ABT 638 in Neustria, France
Reference Number: 2818
Note: Dagobert I (died 639), king of the Franks, was the son of Clotaire II. In 623 his father established him as king of the region east of the Ardennes, and in 626 revived for him the ancient kingdom of Austrasia, minus Aquitaine and Provence. As Dagobert was but yet a child, he was placed under the authority of the mayor of the palace, Pepin, and Arnulf, bishop of Metz. At the death of Clotaire II in 628, Dagobert wished to re-establish unity in the Frankish realm, and in 629 and 630 make expeditions into Neustria and Burgundy, where he succeeded on the whole in securing the recognition of his authority. In Aquitaine he gave his brother Caribert the administration of the counties of Toulouse, Cahors, Agen, Pérogeux and Saintes; but at Caribert's death in 632 Dagobert became sole ruler of the whole of the Frankish territories south of the Loire. Under him the Merovingian monarchy attained its culminating point. He restored to the royal domain the lands that had been usurped by the great nobles and by the church; he maintained at Paris a luxurious, though, from the example he himself set, a disorderly court; he was a patron of the arts and delighted in the exquisite craftsmanship of his treasurer, the goldsmith, St. Eloi. His authority was recognized through the length and breadth of the realm. The duke of the Basques came to his court to swear fidelity, and at his villa at Clichy the chief of the Bretons of Domnoné promised obedience. He intervened in the affairs of the Visigoths of Spain and the Lombards of Italy, and was heard with deference. Indeed, as a sovereign, Dagobert was reckoned superior to the other barbarian kings. He entered into relations with the eastern empire, and swore a "perpetual peace" with the emperor Heraclius; and it is probable that the two sovereigns took common measures against the Slav and Burgundian tribes which ravaged in turn the Byzantine state and the German territories subject to the Franks. Dagobert protected the church and placed illustrious prelates at the head of the bishoprics---Eloi (Eligius) at Noyon, Ouen (Audoenus) at Rouen and Didier (Desiderius) at Cahors. His reign is also marked by the creation of numerous monasteries and by renewed missionary activity in Flanders and among the Basques. He died on Jan 9, 639, as was buried at St. Denis. After his death the Frankish monarchy was again divided. In 634 he had been obliged to give the Austrasians a special king in the person of his eldest son Sigebert, and at the birth of a second son, Colvis, in 635, the Neustrians had immediately claimed him as king. Thus the unification of the realm, which Dagobert had re-established with so much pains, was anulled. [Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1961 ed., Vol. 6, pp. 971-972, Dagobert I].

Queen Nanthildis of Neustria was a former servant and married the Merovingian king Dagobert I (604-29-35) after he had divorced his childless consort, Gomatrud. After Dagobert's death her son, Chlodwig II was appointed king of Neutrasia and Burgundy and his older half-brother, Sigibert III king of Austrasia. She received 1/3 of the royal treasure. She acted as regent together with the Major Domus Aega. As he attacked the Burgund farons she protected them and 642 she reformed the office of Major Domus of Burgundy and appointed the Frankish Flaochad to the office

{geni:about_me} Regintrud (also Reginlind and Regentrud), (b. 660-665 d. 730-740) is something of an enigma.

The sources quoted by Schreibner indicate that the records show a Regentrud as the sister of Adela of Pfalzel and daughter of king Dagobert I.

This is supported by the following:

Another Regentrud being listed in the tradition book of the Nonnberg Abbey as regentrudis regina (marking her a Merovingian princess) The names of her sons, through her marriage to duke Theodo of Bavaria, are also Merowingian, that is, from the families of Regentrud and Adela According to these sources, 8th century witnesses only mention Folchaid as the wife of Theodo.

The supposition that queen Regintrud, the benefactor of the abbey founded by Rupert of Salzburg and Theodo mentioned above, must therefore be the wife of Theodo, is attributed to the 15th century historians Suntheim and Aventin.

As an alternative explanation, the sources suggest that Regintrud was the queen of Theudebert, who may have had his support of the abbey attributed instead to his late father, Theodo.

After the death of Theudebert, another Regentrud entered the Nonnberg Abbey and later became abbess in 720-725. This is listed in the Salzburger Verbrüderungsbuch in 784. Assuming the abbess Regentrud and queen Regentrud are one in the same, she may have entered the abbey on her husbands death.

This could explain why the name of Theudeberts wife is excluded in the communion book of St. Peter in respect for her position as abbess. However, much of this is mere speculation based on the individuals named being one in the same.

The following lineages have been suggested:

Daughter of the Seneschal (and Pfalzgraf) Hugobert and Irmina of Oeren.
Daughter of Dagobert I
Daughter of Childebert III

Children of Regintrud and first husband

Pilitrud

Children of Regintrud and Treudebert

Hugbert of Bavaria, heir to the duchy
Swanachild, wife of Charles Martel
Guntrud, wife of Liutprand

Nanthild (c. 610 – 642) (also known as Nantéchilde, Nanthechilde, Nanthildis, Nanthilde, or Nantechildis) was the third of many wives of Dagobert I, king of the Franks (629-639).

She was of Saxon lineage, born about 608 or 610. The Lexikon des Mittelalters calls her ein Mädchen aus dem Dienstpersonal ("a maiden of the royal [ Austrasian ] household"). After Dagobert's death in January 639, she was initially regent for her son, accompanied by Aega, mayor of the Neustrian palace and an opponent of the powerful contingent of nobles headed by Burgundofaro whose seat was at Meaux.

In the interest of reducing noble Burgundian independence of the Merovingian palace, she married her niece Ragnoberta to the Frank Flaochad and had the magnates and bishops of the realm of Burgundy acclaim him mayor of the palace at Orléans in 642. Soon she died at Landry in what was then Burgundy, where she had long resided; her body was translated to the Saint Denis Basilica. Her untimely death allowed her son to fall under the influence of the nobility, who abhorred a strong royal hand.
