Shirley Hesselink, age 82, of Rudyard, Michigan, died March 12, 2014 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She was born on May 31, 1931 in Rudyard to Andrew and Anna (Folkersma) Ploegstra. Shirley and her twin sister Ellen were the youngest of seven children. She was a lifelong Rudyard resident and Rudyard High School graduate. Shirley married Howard Hesselink on August 29, 1950 in Rudyard. Shirley was an excellent hostess, gifted in baking and cooking. Everyone was welcome in her home where she always had fresh baked goods and other food to share. Shirley truly enjoyed hosting afternoon tea for family and friends. Shirley was a life member of Rudyard Christian Reformed Church and had been actively involved in many church committees and activities. She also contributed her time and talents to the Rudyard Christian School and the Quilting Guild. Shirley enjoyed quilting, playing Scrabble, baking, gardening, bowling, and camping. Shirley’s heart for others was constantly shown in acceptance and serving others, she always had a listening ear to anyone who needed it. She lived by Micah 6:8 every day of her life, "He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?"
Shirley is survived by her husband of 63 years, Howard; sons, Wayne (Cheryl Shelanskey) Hesselink of Rudyard and Lan (Charlene) Hesselink of Visalia, California; daughters, Beverly (Chuck) Tolsma of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Sharon (Keith) Harris of Grand Rapids; former daughter-in-law, Mary Hesselink of Rudyard; grandchildren, Wayne F. Hesselink, Jessie Hesselink (Aaron) Koerth, Katie Tolsma (Scott) Meier, Berlinda (Keith Abed) Tolsma, Brent Hesselink, Jenna Hesselink, Auna Harris, Ian Harris, Nick Harris, and Marlee Harris; and great-grandchildren, Izeck Tolsma and Zane Koerth. She is also survived by her twin sister, Ellen (Arie) Van Eek of Waterdown, Ontario, with whom she shared the very special bond that only twins can share; sisters, Margaret Kamper of Grand Rapids and Thelma Drenth of Ellsworth, Michigan; and sisters-in-law, Wilma Ploegstra, Harriet Routhier, and Connie Hesselink. Shirley is preceded in death by her granddaughter, Lauren Hesselink; brother, Herman Ploegstra; sisters, Esther Ploegstra and Gertrude Besteman; and brothers-in-law, James Kamper, John Drenth, Glen Routhier, John Hesselink, and Elmer Besteman.
Services will be held Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the Christian Reformed Church in Rudyard. Visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. with the funeral service to follow at 3:00 P.M. with Pastor Wendell Davelaar conducting the service. Burial will be in North Rudyard Cemetery in the spring.
