1248-1309. Son of Charles I of Naples; count of Anjou and Provence; king of Naples (1289-1309). Charles was an important figure in Rome, influencing the election of popes Celestine V and Boniface VIII. He sugsequently struggled to gain the throne of Sicily from James II of Aragon, but in 1302 was forced to concede his rights to James's brother Frederick. [The Plantagenet Encyclopedia, p. 46]
