Notes par Odo de Conteville Bishop of Bayeux

Vicomte Herluin & his first wife had three children: son of Duke's chamberlain, " as the mother of " William ... ... was born of a concubine of Robert of the general ", and that after Duke Robert died " Herluinus ... Miles " by whom he had married her " had two sons, Odo and Robert " [918] . The birth date is estimated on the assumption that Guillaume of Eudes of Jumièges is correct (which is not beyond doubt, as noted above). Orderic Vitalis records that Guillaume Duke of Normandy granted " with many honors; in Normandy, and England " to " Herluinus Contavilla ... ... of his sons, Ralph, whom he had children by his wife of another, and your brothers, and uterine, and charged Robert Odo, " [919] . Florence of Worcester names Eudes as the brother of King William 1 " but only on his mother's side " [920] . [Geoffrey Richard Driscoll Tobin has suggested that the third and fourth witnesses were Robert and Eudes in the following charter, sons of Vicomte Herluin [921] : " Earl Eudo and his nephew Geoffrey, Robert son of Alan the sheriff and the sheriff, his brother Eudes ... ... Guichomarus "witnessed a charter dated to 1050 relating to the abbey of Saint-Georges de Rennes [922] . No brothers named Robert and Eudes Vicomte have been identified among the Breton nobility at the time, and the suggestion is plausible. If correct, it has several implications. Firstly, the order of their names indicates that Robert was older than his brother Eudes. Secondly, this would be the only primary source which indicates that Robert vicecomital bore the title (before the death of his father). Thirdly, the dating of the charter is probably correct considering the suggested date of Eudes's appointment as bishop.] Bishop of Bayeux [1050] (when Eudes must have been an adolescent, assuming that his birth date is correctly estimated as shown above). Guillaume of Jumièges records that, after the death of " Bishop of Bayeux, Hugh, son of Rudolph of the count ", Guillaume 2 Duke of Normandy appointed " Odo to his brother, " to the bishopric of Bayeux, a position he held for nearly 50 years [923] . He is said to have taken an active part in the preparation of the Norman invasion of England and was present at the battle of Hastings 23 Oct 1066. The short report concerning the origin of William the Conqueror, records that " Odo, Bishop of Bayeux " contributed towards the 120 ships invasion of England in 1066 [924] . His half-brother William King of England rewarded him with a grant of over 1 500 manors in England and created him Earl of Kent in 1067 [925] . Orderic Vitalis records that King William installed " Guillermum Osberni the son of " at his new fortress at Winchester ( " within the walls of the perfumes ") and appointed him " the whole of the kingdom of the North, in His stead ", while he granted " at Dover, in Kent, the whole ... " to " Odo his brother ", and thus he entrusted" the governement of England, these two ", seconded by" Hugh, and Hugh de Montfort of the Grentemaisnilio, Guillelmumque de Garenne ", dated to 1067 [926] . Florence of Worcester records that King William left" his brothers the province of Odo, bishop of Bayeux, and William of Hereford, sonne to his companions whom he "when he went to Normandy 21 Feb [1067] [927] . he was one of the leaders of the force which suppressed the rebellion of the earls of Norfolk and Hereford in 1075 [ 928] . He began scheming to become Pope, sending great gifts to influential men in Rome, but was arrested by King William and sent to Normandy where he was a prisoner in Rouen between 1082 and 1087 [929] . Orderic Vitalis records that King William captured " in the Isle of Wight ... Odo to his brother, " and held him in prison for four years " for the greatness of their own " [930] . He was released by King William on his deathbed [931] . Although King William 2 Eudes restored to his earldom, he was one of the leaders of the rebellion in 1088 which sought to put Robert Duke of Normandy on the English throne [932] . He was banished from England and all his honors and possessions forfeited. He became chief adviser to Duke Robert in Normandy [933] . Orderic Vitalis records that Bishop Eudes died " in the city of Palermo, which is usually Palern they call " and that " the bishop Gilbert of Ebroicensis " buried " in the metropolitan church of the Holy Mary, mother of God ", adding that he had been appointed " from his youth " (which supports that the theory that 2 he was born after the death of Robert, Duke of Normandy, as discussed above) [934] . William of Malmesbury records that he left on the First Crusade and died with Robert Duke of Normandy 3 " at Antioch, during the siege of the Christians " [935] . The necrology of Jumièges records the death 2 Jan of " Odo the bishop " [936] . Bishop Eudes had one illegitimate son:an de Bayeux (-1131). Son of Eudes bishop of Bayeux according to Orderic Vitalis, who records that Jean gave King Henry news of the death of his nephew Guillaume "Clitus" Count of Flanders in 1128 [937] . Orderic Vitalis records that he lived at the court of Henry 1 King of England where he was held in esteem for his eloquence and probity [938] . 9), Book 7, 3, p. 268. d Tobin 21 Aug 2015. queror , p. 22. 243, and Florence of Worcester, 1074, p. 178. ©vost), Vol. 3, Book 7, 15, p. 246. 7.
