Reuben Miller, age 86, of Aplington, Iowa, was born October 31, 1922, the son of Jans and Gertie (Bohlen) Miller in rural Parkersburg, Iowa. He attended country schools and finished ninth grade in the Aplington School after which he stayed home on the farm.
Reuben was united in marriage with Jean Roberta Conner at the Bristow Reformed Parsonage on May 26, 1945. The couple made their home on the farm west of Bristow, Iowa until they retired in 1987, at which time they moved to Aplington. Reuben farmed all his life and was very particular with his land and animals.
Reuben was an active member of the First Reformed Church in Bristow since 1957. He served many years as an Elder, Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and made crafts for the Bristow children’s after-school clubs. During retirement Reuben enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing golf and pool and the outdoors. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal and Green Bay Packers fan.
Reuben died Sunday, April 12, 2009, at Maple Manor Village, Aplington, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Herman and Joe and three sisters, Henrietta Meinders, Jennie Bohn and Lela True.
Reuben is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jean Miller, Aplington, Iowa; one son, Douglas Charles and his wife, Karen, of San Ramon, California and one daughter, Pamela Jean Wiegmann and her husband, Earl Dean of Dumont; four grandchildren, Amy Wiegmann (Jake) Feuerhelm, Ankeny, Iowa; Carla (Adam) Holm, Parkersburg, Iowa; Cory (Sara) Wiegmann, Greene, Iowa; Rebecca Miller and fiancé Carlos Troncoso, Pleasanton, California; six great-grandchildren, Michelle Aukes, Billy Aukes, Tyler Aukes, Chase Wiegmann, Hunter Wiegmann, Gunnar Vance; four step-great-grandchildren, Adam and Cierra Holm and Jared and Gavin Feuerhelm; two sisters, Ruth Hook, Aplington, Iowa and Lila Borneman, Dumont, Iowa.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at the First Reformed Church with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, both in Bristow.
Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington, (319) 347-6275. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be directed to research for Parkinson's Disease, American Cancer Society or Dollars for Scholars in Parkersburg.
