Enfant(s):
Cornelius Jongeling was born on October 20, 1851 in the tiny village of Tichelwarf. His father, called Jan, was a farmer, but he did not have any land, and had to settle for being a farm laborer. Cornelius had an older brother Jan born June 14, 1849, a younger brother Hendrik born in 1858, and a sister Anna (married to Claus Hinders) born June 19, 1863. All the Jongeling children, (Jan, Cornelius, Hendrik and Anna) with their families, immigrated to the Parkersburg, Iowa area in the 1890's. Today all the decedents use the German spelling of "Jungling" rather than the Dutch "Jongeling".
Cornelius and Janna were married in Weener, Ostfriesland on June 18, 1871. They had 10 children, with 4 dying in childhood or at birth in Germany. The oldest, a girl Antze Josen died at age 3. Two boys Cornelius and Jan, and one girl Benkmina, died as tiny infants. The remaining 6 children, with their parents, immigrated to Parkersburg, Iowa in 1892. Cornelius farmed in the Parkersburg, Iowa area from 1892 until his death, he was a small thin man who had a keen mind for the business of farming. He was a dedicated churchman who contributed much time and energy to the Parkersburg Christian Reformed Church and Classis Ostfriesland. His civic contributions centered around service as a board member of the Public School System. Although he was 51 years old when he immigrated, he worked hard and prospered in the United States when given the opportunity to succeed. He passed away on March 12, 1920 at age 69. Janna lived with her children, on turns, until her death April 22, 1939.
Of the six living children, Grandma Buss (Anna Jongeling) was the youngest. She was born January 7, 1887. She did not like being young so she borrowed her dead infant brothers birthyear. Her brother Jan had been born November 20, 1885. There were no birth records in the United States and she was stuck with her new birthdate after it was recorded. Three of her sisters and her brother married and lived their lives in Northcentral Iowa, primarily Butler county. One sister, Antze married Berend K. Schroeder and moved to Clara City, MN.
