A jurist and politician who is considered the father of modern jurisprudence. He was a passionate and brilliant speaker, which made him beloved by his students, the most famous of whom were Wilhelm and Jakob Grimm.
Although originally buried in the Sankt-Hedwigs-Kathedrale in Berlin-Mitte, his remains were removed in 1875 to a chapel on the family estate, Hof Trages. (See his cenotaph page.) Berlin has named a city square and an S-train station in Berlin-Charlottenburg after Savigny. His wife, Kunigunde Brentano, was the sister of poet and novelist Clemens Brentano.(Find a grave)
