Allen G. Van Kooten, 92 years of age, of Concordia, passed away Monday, May 13, 2013 at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina.
He was born on October 27, 1920 in Long Island, Kansas to Adrian and Grace (Skemper) Van Kooten.
He attended grade and high school in Long Island, graduating in 1938. He received his Bachelor's degree in Education from Fort Hays State in 1942 and later his Master's degree in Counseling from Emporia State University.
On February 14, 1942, he married his high school sweetheart Erma "Lucille" Stone at Alma, Nebraska.
A veteran of WWII, he served with the 8th Air Force servicing B-17 heavy bombardment planes in England. He received his honorable discharge from the service on October 28, 1945.
He started his teaching career in January of 1946 at Randall Rural High School in Randall. In the fall of 1947, he moved to Concordia and was on the faculty of Concordia High School for 38 years as a coach, teacher, and counselor, retiring in 1986.
During summer months, he was a small grain crop hail adjuster for 46 years.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church serving in many different positions including Lay Leader and Chancel Choir Member.
He was a life member of the Kansas National Education Association; life member of VFW Post #588 and the American Legion Post #76. He was a former member of Rotary International and Kiwanis, serving as Kiwanis President two terms.
He served on the Cloud County Community College Board of Trustees.
He greatly enjoyed vocal music and was a 25 year member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. In later years, he enjoyed 14 years singing in the trio, "Dan, Van, and The Man."
Allen is survived by a daughter, Linda Lucas and husband Jack of Goodland; 3 granddaughters, Cortney Kirchner and husband Jason of Spring Hill, Mia Rainbolt and husband Christian of Fort Collins, Colorado, Jocelyn Lucas and fiancé Michael Graham of Kansas City; 5 great grandchildren, Bryce, Cory, and Camille Kirchner, Lily and Anya Rainbolt; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Erma Lucille Van Kooten on December 5, 2007; 6 sisters, Pauline Navis, Hattie Erickson, Clara Voorman, Cornelia Rupke, LaVerne Van Kooten, Loraine Thalheim; and 2 brothers, Bernard and Duane.
