Irene was the last and 10th child of Pieter and Della Vander Beek DeJong. She was born in Norton County just at the edge of Phillips County. (It doesn't show up on the choices.) She was baptized Feb. 23, 1913 at the Prairie View Reformed Church. She had 5 siblings by Pieter's first wife, Anna tenBosch, - Peter Martin, Nicholas, Dick, Albert, and Anna. Then 9 siblings by Pieter's wife Della - Aaron John, Gracie, Henry, David, Grace, Herbert, Nellie, Deda, and David Edward.
She graduated from Prairie View High School in 1931. That spring she played on the Trophy Winning Girl's Basketball team and they went to the national AAU tournament in Dallas TX. Irene was only 5 feet tall and also on the team was her niece, Velma, who was 6 feet tall.
Irene got her life certificate for teaching from Kansas State Teachers' College in Emporia KS August 6, 1941 where she majored in Government and History. She taught in the Prairie View area for several years attending summer school at Denver University where she received her Masters Degree in Elementary Education. From 1945 until 1977 she taught mostly 4th grade in the Topeka KS schools. She received a plaque for outstanding service to the Topeka Public Schools. She also received an award of recognition as a 50-year member of Alpha Delta Kappa.
June 8, 1966 she was in a destructive tornado in Topeka and lost all her worldly possessions.

After retiring she moved back to live with her sister, Deda, on the family farm east of Prairie View. Shortly after that she suffered from skin cancer that left her without a nose. A year later a nose was rebuilt for her at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
In 1997 she suffered a heart attack. At the time she was living alone so decided to move to Assisted Living Complex in Logan KS. She lived there until 2004 when she moved to Logan Manor where she lived the rest of her life. (According to the family records Irene died on the above date. Her gravestone shows 2006.)
Her niece, Wanda DeBoer Prinsen, took responsibility for Irene in her later years and made sure her needs were supplied.
