  Donald II, Gaelisch: Dòmhnall mac Chòiseim (?, ? - Forres of Dunnottar, 900) was koning van de Picten en koning van Alba. Hij volgde Eochaid en Giric op en regeerde gedurende elf jaren. In Berchan's Prophecy wordt hij the rough one (de ruwe) genoemd, met weinig interesse voor heilige relieken en psalmen.
  
  Tijdens zijn regering had hij veel te maken met invallen van de Gaelen en de Vikingen. Tijdens de regering van zijn vader Constantijn I had de Viking Harald Noorwegen veroverd en tot één koninkrijk gemaakt. Een aantal earls, die zich niet wilden onderwerpen, vluchtten naar Orkney, Shetland en de Hebriden, van waaruit zij strooptochten ondernamen, onder andere naar de kusten van Noorwegen. Ten tijde van de regering van Donald II ondernam koning Harald een expeditie om deze earls aan te pakken. Harald schoonde Shetland en daarna Orkney. Vervolgens plunderde hij op de Hebriden en op het vasteland van Schotland. Shetland en Orkney voegde hij toe aan zijn koninkrijk.
  
  Het was de tweede earl van Orkney, Sigurd Eynsteinson (broer van Rognvald Eynsteinson, de eerste earl), die een verbond sloot met Thorstein de Rode, zoon van Olaf de Witte, koning van Dublin. Tezamen namen zij Caithness, Sutherland en delen van Ross en Moray in. Sigurd stierf ten gevolge van verwondingen opgelopen in de gevechten; Thorstein de Rode riep zichzelf uit tot koning van noord-Schotland. Hij regeerde ongeveer een jaar totdat hij viel in een gevecht in Caithness. Zijn nakomelingen vestigden zich in IJsland, net als verscheidene andere Vikingen en Kelten, die gevlucht waren voor koning Harald.
  
  Donald II hield tijdens deze periode wel de laaglanden in zijn greep. Hij werd als eerste ri alban genoemd, koning van Alba. Strathclyde werd in deze tijd geregeerd door ene koning Donald, vermoedelijk een nabije bloedverwant. Uiteindelijk sneuvelde Donald II in een gevecht in noord-Schotland bij Dunnottar of Forres in het jaar 900. Donald II werd begraven op Iona.

  Domnall mac Causantín (Modern Gaelic: Dòmhnall mac Chòiseim),[1] anglicised as Donald II (died 900) was King of the Picts or King of Scotland (Alba) in the late 9th century. He was the son of Constantine I (Causantín mac Cináeda). Donald is given the epithet Dásachtach, "the Madman", by the Prophecy of Berchán.[2]

  Donald became king on the death or deposition of Giric (Giric mac Dúngail), the date of which is not certainly known but usually placed in 889. The Chronicle of the Kings of Alba reports:
  
  Doniualdus son of Constantini held the kingdom for 11 years [889–900]. The Northmen wasted Pictland at this time. In his reign a battle occurred between Danes and Scots at Innisibsolian where the Scots had victory. He was killed at Opidum Fother [modern Dunnottar] by the Gentiles.[3]
  
  It has been suggested that the attack on Dunnottar, rather than being a small raid by a handful of pirates, may be associated with the ravaging of Scotland attributed to Harald Fairhair in the Heimskringla.[4] The Prophecy of Berchán places Donald's death at Dunnottar, but appears to attribute it to Gaels rather than Norsemen; other sources report he died at Forres.[5] Donald's death is dated to 900 by the Annals of Ulster and the Chronicon Scotorum, where he is called king of Alba, rather than king of the Picts. He was buried on Iona.
  
  The change from king of the Picts to king of Alba is seen as indicating a step towards the kingdom of the Scots, but historians, while divided as to when this change should be placed, do not generally attribute it to Donald in view of his epithet.[6] The consensus view is that the key changes occurred in the reign of Constantine II (Causantín mac Áeda),[7] but the reign of Giric has also been proposed.[8]
  
  The Chronicle of the Kings of Alba has Donald succeeded by his cousin Constantine II. Donald's son Malcolm (Máel Coluim mac Domnall) was later king as Malcolm I. The Prophecy of Berchán appears to suggest that another king reigned for a short while between Donald II and Constantine II, saying "half a day will he take sovereignty". Possible confirmation of this exists in the Chronicon Scotorum, where the death of "Ead, king of the Picts" in battle against the Uí Ímair is reported in 904. This, however, is thought to be an error, referring perhaps to Ædwulf, the ruler of Bernicia, whose death is reported in 913 by the other Irish annals
