He was called Beauclerc for his scholarly interests and Lion of Justice for refinements which he brought about in the administrative and legislative machinery of the time.
Henry died from food poisoning, due to over indulging of his favourite dish of lampreys (fish), which his doctors had forbidden him.
His body was returned to England and was buried at Reading Abbey. The Abbey was destroyed during the Reformation. No trace of Henry's tomb has survived. Nearby a small plaque and a large memorial cross has been erected in the adjoining Forbury Gardens.
