The book, Humphrey's Family in America, by Dr. Frederick Humphrey, was published in 1883. It contains a wealth of
data about the family of Michael Humphrey of Lyme Regis, Dorset, England. He immigrated circa 1640 to Simsbury
Connecticut, where he settled, became an important & responsible citizen.
This book has very well-authenticated data based on birth, baptism, marriage, burial and probate records from New England,
and it's the source of the data on our Humphrey family in America from 1643 till circa 1883. From 1883 to the present we have
records from Correll Myron Humphrey's family.
Earlier theories that Michael's father was a Samuel were largely based on a letter written in 1648 to Michael, ostensibly from
his mother & father, Susannah & Samuel. Close reading of this letter reveals that it was written by his mother & signed for a
Samuel & Mary, possibly siblings - there are records of these siblings and the dates are consistent.
***Update - 3/14/04 **** There are conflicting records in current international databases: was Michael's father Samuel or Michael of Honiton?
There are many letters between Michael & Samuel, his brother in St Malo France in the 1660's & 1670's, too late for this
Samuel to be his father. It's seems more consistent to assume that Samuel was his brother, and that his father had
passed away before 1648, and his mother had signed the letter for Samuel, who was still living at home at the age then of 17.

******** New Information - 3/14/04 *********
We are currently investigating the possibility that Michael was from Northern France or that his parents were of a family that
had recently immigrated to southern England from Northern France. Several of Michael's children spoke and wrote French.
There are records of legal proceedings involving his 2 sons, Michael who immigrated to Connecticut & Samuel who moved
to St Malo, France, directly across the English channel from Lyme Regis.
The English civil war give rise to many attacks on Lyme Regis by the English army and many public records were burned in
the ensuing fires. The years of 1590-1620 are missing in the public records of birth, death, baptism & marriage. There are no
Lyme Regis records of the origins of Michael Humphrey - but -
in Feb, 2004, from LDS & Rootweb contacts, we learned that potentially, Michael's father might have been Michael (Michall/Mighell) Humphrey, born 1577 in Honiton, Devon, 15 miles NW of Lyme Regis. In 1615 he married Martha Pride, who was the mother of our Lyme Regis Michael and brother Samuel. We have document copies for the christening of the elder Michael, 1/31/1577, and we're currently trying to find documents/copies indicating the marriage of Michael (elder) with Martha Pride, Bridport, 7/4/1615.
The surname "Humphrey" in all it's phonetic variations is Norman/Scandinavian: Amfrey, Onfroy, Omfroy, Umfrey, Unfroi, etc.
& the corresponding plural forms are Norman names and exist there today, as they were prior to 1066, when William the
Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, invaded England & infused Norman culture into England in the ensuing years.
The surname, Humphrey, surged to England with William in 1066, augmenting the Humphreys who had moved there, earlier
from Scandinavian countries. And, of course, there were families not necessarily of Nordic descent, who adopted our surname,
which we know existed from at least the 5th century.
Our FTDNA Humphrey surname DNA project & testing by Trace Genetics have verified that our paternal Ychromsome haplogroup is I1a1, currently thought to have diverged from it's parent group in SW Norway, circa 3500 years ago. Definitely Scandinavian, if it eventually proves to be Viking/Norman, this would corroborate the family lore (Viking & Norman to souohern England with William), & also English & French history of our surname, and the joint land ownership described in the 1086 Domesday book, with other Norman/Scandinavian companions of William. Notably Humphrey the Chamberlain & Humphrey d'ile.

In "Humphreys Family in America", by Dr. Frederick Humphreys, pub. 1883, page 242, "Addenda to page 16, Antiquity of
the Humphreys Family":
" It is quite probable that the earlier emigrations to England, and also to Wales, have
resulted in larger numerical body than the emigration from Normandy at the time of the
Conquest, and we must regard them all as branches of the same common genealogical
tree, however, much they may differ in their present characteristics or immediate origin."
It is the goal of our current FTDNA Humphrey surname project to use genetic genealogy to study the relationships among
the Humphrey families today in America & Europe. Currently, the data corroborates this historically and linguistically based
hypothesis by Dr. Humphreys in 1883. Further data should add more clarity.
