Obituary:
RICHARD LOWDON SHIREK
Born August 7, 1927 in Stockton, San Jaoquin, California, USA to Grace Woods Shirek and Rolfe Lowdon Shirek of Bakersfield, Ca.
Richards father owned a car dealership in Bakersfield where Richard worked as a young man and was fired and rehired by his father many times. He moved to Hemet as a teenager and attended Hemet High School. He graduated in 1945 and immediately enlisted in the US Navy where he was deployed to Pearl Harbor just as the war was ending.
Returning to Hemet he went to work for his step father, Robert Squires Insurance and eventually bought the company on Squires retirement and renamed it Hemet Insurance Service. He became a successful and skilled life insurance agent.
Richard became a private pilot like his father and co-owned a Cessna airplane that he flew constantly and had many escapades in with his friends and family. He still proudly held his pilots license and flew with his son Chip, who is also a private pilot.
In 1985 he sold the insurance agency to his partner Kenneth Hyatt and Michael McIntyre and spent his time developing properties and commercial buildings in the valley and Anza, earning him the nickname Mrr Anza. His developments now dot the landscape of the Hemet valley from east to west.
Richard was predeceased by his brother Carl Shirek, who died in 1981, and has many nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Diana Shirek of Hemet, Ca; sister Patricia Langhoff of Lodi, CA; Children Karen Yeakel of Seattle, Wa, Kellie Shirek of Jacksonville, NC and Chip Shirek of Cape Coral, Fl. Wayne Norton of Hemet, Ca, and Karilyn Edwards of Del Mar, Ca.Grandchildren Lauren Knox of Big Sky, Montana, Lynsey Kehrli of Seattle, Wa, Ethan & Dane Edwards of Del Mar, Ca, Penelope Norton of Toulouse, France, Christopher Lowe and Derek Neal of Jacksonville, NC. And great grandchildren Aidan Neal, Addison Kehrli, Jude Knox.
Richard loved farming as well and always remained a farmer at heart. He loved to drive a tractor and could be found in jeans and disking up the land for many years on his ranch. He owned and rode horses for many years with the family and friends and loved to go on overnight trail rides with his group.
