Bert Paul
Van Komen
"Endured to the End"
Bert passed away on the morning of September 13, 2011. Bert was born August 19, 1939 in Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
He was the oldest of four children born to Egbert Van Komen and Maria Christina Van Maare. He and his family immigrated
to Salt Lake City after enduring the privations of World War II. He graduated from West HS and earned a bachelor's
degree in economics from the University of Utah. He married his loving complement and spirited Brit, Doreen Lees, on
May 19, 1965 in the Salt Lake Temple. Doreen preceded him in death on June 28, 2007.
Bert was a general contractor by trade. He and his brother Robert built upon their father's legacy of hard work and
developed fine neighborhoods along the Wasatch Front, and oversaw many restoration projects. He often remarked that it
all began with their father's herring cart.
Bert was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He came from a family of faith and
sacrifice. He served a mission in the Switzerland-Zurich Mission. He was a master genealogist and researched and
recorded tens of thousands of his kindred dead. His love of family history and finding the obscure and difficult record
kept him engaged even as his health failed him.
Bert loved his family and was particularly proud of his sons' academic and professional achievements. Bert is survived
by his four sons: Lee (Malia) Van Komen of Gig Harbor, WA, Paul (Melinda) Van Komen of Riverton, Stephen (Brooke) Van
Komen of El Dorado Hills, CA, Jeffrey (Lindy) Van Komen of Mason, OH; and eighteen grandchildren. He is also survived
by his brothers George (Susie) Van Komen, Robert (Janie) Van Komen and his sister Corina (Siegried) Jachmann.
The family would like to thank Select Home Care, the staff of Intermountain Medical Center's Respiratory ICU, and
Sandy, Cory and the other exceptional caregivers of First Choice Home Health for their compassionate care.
Services will be held Monday, September 19 at 11:00 a.m. with a prior viewing at 9:30 a.m. at the Tithing Hill Chapel,
1208 West 12400 South. Friends may call Sunday, September 18 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950
East 10600 South.
