The Cobequid Planters 250 Society has selected this Flax Flower drawing as its official Logo for celebrations during the years 2010-2011. The design was submitted by Hannah Guinan, a summer assistant at the Colchester Historical Museum in Truro in 2009. The blue flax flower was suggested because flax was the most important crop grown by the Planters in Cobequid. Census figures document its presence on almost every farm. Flax seed was sold, and in many households, men, women and children worked together in a family setting to produce fine, marketable linen. Top quality linen, which procured the highest market price in Boston and Halifax, required expertise at every step, from proper spacing of the minute seeds to bleaching finished fibre by dipping it alternately in buttermilk and cow dung. Information provided by Colchester Historical Museum Truro NS These flags are placed in Several Cemeteries; on the gravesite of our Cobequid Planters along the Cobequid coast of Central and Northern Nova Scotia in hopes of draw attention to our ancestors. Colchester Historical Society Truro, Colchester County, NS The year 2011 marks the 250th anniversary of the arrival of English-speaking settlers from New England and Ireland along the Cobequid coast of Central and Northern Nova Scotia. Planters are an old English term for colonists establishing any type of settlement. They ``planted´´ fishing stations, agricultural townships and large plantations. English-speaking settlers of Nova Scotia were called Pre-loyalists until the 1970s when historians re-examined migration into Nova Scotia following the Expulsion of the Acadians. Growing sensitivity to the power of descriptive words called for an alternate designation. The consensus was that ``Planters´´ would be a more appropriate name for those men and women who arrived in Nova Scotia prior to the American Revolution Why 1761? Representatives of New England settlers, along with Chief Surveyor Charles Morris, explored Cobequid in July 1760. In the spring of 1761, departures were advertised in Boston papers and the first settlers arrived in Onslow and Truro at the end of May. Throughout the summer, Alexander McNutt recruited in the North of Ireland and on Oct. 9, 1761, the ship Hopewell sailed into Halifax Harbour bearing settlers for the future Londonderry Township. James Whidden, born in Canterbury, New Hampshire, came to Nova Scotia as a grantee of the Township of Onslow in the 1760's. His ancestry can be traced back to 17th-century Portsmouth, England. James Whidden was among the first settlers of Truro. He was a grantee of the township. He was married and had 4 sons before he came to Nova Scotia. His wife died and he married again to a Mary Gould, widow of Jacob Lynds of Onslow. His widow returned to the house of her son, after James died in 1790. planters-logo Truro NS http://trees.ancestry.com/rd?f=image&guid=772ebc67-3428-4353-9852-0951b3e6e39a&tid=49148314&pid=39 http://o.mfcreative.com/f1/file12/objects/2/9/f/c29f9b7d-a514-461a-b2c2-f04474522eb1-3.jpg http://trees.ancestry.com/rd?f=image&guid=11d8c588-5700-4244-b8ff-23d8ed60d345&tid=49148314&pid=39 http://o.mfcreative.com/f1/file12/objects/2/9/f/c29f9b7d-a514-461a-b2c2-f04474522eb1-3.jpg http://trees.ancestry.com/rd?f=image&guid=7d0f4c48-fa99-4595-a98f-3f77c6159938&tid=49148314&pid=39 http://o.mfcreative.com/f1/file12/objects/2/9/f/c29f9b7d-a514-461a-b2c2-f04474522eb1-3.jpg http://trees.ancestry.com/rd?f=image&guid=2616fe9d-841d-41da-affb-749b26a1333e&tid=49148314&pid=39 http://o.mfcreative.com/f1/file12/objects/2/9/f/c29f9b7d-a514-461a-b2c2-f04474522eb1-3.jpg http://trees.ancestry.com/rd?f=image&guid=10c3e732-d3af-48ba-a580-8762a2f81ddb&tid=49148314&pid=39 W http://trees.ancestry.com/rd?f=image&guid=2daba821-24af-48f4-b4b3-909e99ff2ae5&tid=49148314&pid=39 list of settlers Cobequid NS 1761,1780 ,COLCHESTER HISTORICAL MUSEUM APR22,2010 http://trees.ancestry.com/rd?f=image&guid=c97b5c50-65ed-43a3-b345-96fcd7eaef6c&tid=49148314&pid=39 planter Flag http://trees.ancestry.com/rd?f=image&guid=b32c7706-7585-48f9-ba3b-9d82f8fd1a66&tid=49148314&pid=39 http://o.mfcreative.com/f1/file12/objects/2/9/f/c29f9b7d-a514-461a-b2c2-f04474522eb1-3.jpg http://trees.ancestry.com/rd?f=image&guid=5b89bca3-a213-46b0-ac59-b4d7b7893ea5&tid=49148314&pid=39 http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/15290152/photo/Rkq6D!xMauBaa9q9mV0x3Ug_31p8o539ivmc5sznpzwJs3oVgWgIzj1GTOiyN00W/600 http://trees.ancestry.com/rd?f=image&guid=aa1d175e-03e4-4348-82e7-b541f7ef9593&tid=49148314&pid=39 list of settlers Cobequid NS 1761,1780 ,COLCHESTER HISTORICAL MUSEUM APR22,2010 http://trees.ancestry.com/rd?f=image&guid=f050d085-ef5a-47ac-a880-d383863f5849&tid=49148314&pid=39
