In 1918, according to his World War I draft registration card, John and his family lived at 1509 California St. in Columbus, Indiana. John started out farming, and then worked at Vorwald's Grocery in downtown Columbus. His employer was John Vorwald. He then worked for Power Plus Oil Company, Shell Oil Company, and then Mid-Continent Petroleum Company.
John was not a large man. According to his chauffeur's licenses, he was about 5'9", and weighed a little over 140 pounds.
In 1930, John had a narrow escape from being crushed to death when he was caught between the bumper of a truck and side of the wall at the Mid-Continent Petroleum Company. His right leg was broken at the knee and his other leg was bruised and injured. When the accident happened, he was attempting to crank the truck. The truck had been left in gear and when the engine turned over, the car suddenly started up. John was carried on the bumper for four or five feet and shoved against the wall, according to the Columbus Republic newspaper. His son, Earl, credits his mother with nursing his dad so that his injuries would heal. John was the station agent for the Mid-continent Petroleum Company for twelve years before he died of liver trouble in 1938.
According to the newspaper, his nephews were pallbearers: Robert Behrman, Aaron VonFange, Roy Moorman, Raymond, Elmer, Clarence, Arthur and Louis Streitelmeier. Those carrying flowers were Hazel VonFange, Edna Behrman, Lois Speaker, Olga Meyer, Ethel Streitelmeier, Mrs. Elmer Streitelmeier, Mrs. Charles Smiley, Mrs. Elmer Armuth, Mrs. Clarence Streitelmeier, Mrs. Arthur Streitelmeier, Mrs. Clarence Westemeier, Mrs. Raymond Streitelmeier, Mrs. LaVene Stepp, and Mrs. Dallas Gelfius.
