Note: The following information mostly comes from the NEHGS Register, 1882 Edition, Vol. XXXVI. George was born in Scotland, but went as a young man to Derbyshire, England where tradition has it that he lived with an uncle. From Derbyshire he went to London and then went to New England. He is first known at Windsor, Ct., in 1682. (This information was given by Ezekiel Hayes of New Haven, great-grandson of George.) After his first marriage to Sarah Dibble ended with her death on March 27, 1683 (one day after the birth of her son, George) he married again. Abigail Dibble (written in early records as Dibol) was probably a cousin to Sarah. The births of three sons and four daughter to Abigail and George are recorded at Windsor, the last in June, 1697. In 1698 he is found at Simsbury, in the part of town now called Granby, and in the little hamlet of Salmon Brook, so called from the stream, famous in old times for salmon, crossing its one street. A deed of December 30, 1698, from Thomas Griffin to "George Haize formerly of Windsor," (sale price, 28 pounds) is recorded at Simsbury. His name appears in the "Minister's Rate of 1700, the "Wood Rate" on January 31, 1700/01, the "Centry Rate" of 1701, and in the list of freemen the same year. He also had about 4 acres of meadow taken according to the "Lyst of Simsbury lands taken by ye Sizers." By deed of March 6, 1708, John Matson conveys to "George Hayse of ye town of Simsbury Husbandman, "land lying between the lowr meadow lotts and the uper Meadow Lotts upon a little brook by reason of the willingness of said brooke is called Crooked Brooke--being ten acres more or less." Then, January 2, 1723, the town granted to "ye severall persons hereafter named the quantities of land hereafter expressd: to George Hays Sener 138 acres; Daniel Hays 120; George Hays Juner 99; William Hays 75; Samuel Hays 60." (They couldn't seem to settle on a spelling of the name, as it was spelled differently in almost every record, i.e., Haize, Hayes, Hayz, Hayse, Hays, Haiz, Haze, and even Hais.) George wrote his will April 30, 1725 and it was proved October 5, 1725, a month after his death on September 2, 1725. In his will he bequeaths to his wife, abigail, during her widowhood, his "dwelling house, barn, orchard, home lot and pasture," with household goods as far as needful, and one cow; to the four elder sons, "Daniel, George, William and Samuell," two-thirds of his residuary estate, and to his six daughters, "Abigail, Sarah, Mary, Johanna, Thankfull and Doritha" the remaining third, with the addition of 10 pounds to Daniel and 5 pounds to Abigail ("by reason of her lameness"); and to his youngest son, Benjamin, who Abigail was then living with, the "Bever Marsh" of ten acres, and his share in "oure Saw Mill at Salmon Brook," the said Benjamin to "dwell and live with me and support me in all my wants and necessities," and "to behave himself towards me as a dutyfull Child ought to do towards a dutyfull parent, during my natural life." In his will he calls himself "yeoman" and "about seventy years of age." He was probably buried in the older cemetery at "Hop Meadow" which dated from 1683.

George HAYES, who arrived in New England about the year 1680, and probably was about twenty-five years old at the time of his immigration, first settled in Windsor, Connecticut, whence he removed in 1698 to that part of Simsbury, Connecticut, which is now Granby. In a manuscript record written or dictated by his grandson, Ezekiel HAYES, of New Haven, he is referred to as follows: " Went form Scotland to Derbyshire, England, and lived with his uncle. He was anxious to see London, whither he went. Having received some account of America, he took passage for this country." George HAYES' residence in Simsbury was in the locality known as Salmon Brook, and he died there, September 2, 1725. Although he was not active in public affairs his name frequently appears in the early town records of Simsbury in connection with land transactions, assessments, "minister's rates," etc., and from these it may be inferred that he was pious, thrifty, and in every way a worthy citizen. His first wife, whose Christian name was Sarah and whose surname is illegible on the Windsor records, died early in 1683, and the children of this union died young. At Windsor, August 29, 1683, he married (second) Abigail DIBBLE, only daughter of Samuel, granddaughter of Thomas, and great granddaughter of Robert DIBBLE, who arrived from England in 1635, settling in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Children, born in Windsor: 1. Abigail, August 31, 1684, married Paul TOMPKINS; 2. Daniel, born April 26, 1686; 3. Sarah, January 22, 1687-8, married John GOSARD (or GOZZARD), son of Nicholas and Elizabeth GOZZARD, of Windsor; 4. Mary, born January 6, 1689-90, married August 28, 1712 to William RICE; 5. Joanna, born October 2, 1692,died after 1780, married James HILLYER, of Simsbury; 6. George, born March 9, 1695; 7. William, born June 13, 1697, in Simsbury; 8. Samuel, mentioned below; 9. Thankful, born 1700-01, married October 9, 1717 to Nathaniel HOLCOMBE; 10. Benjamin, born 1703-03; 11. Dorothy, born 1706, married Abraham DIBBLE, her first cousin.
