"Harm V. Behrends - - son of Valentin Behrends, was born in 1851 in Ostfriesland, Germany. In 1868, when he was seventeen, the family left Germany for New York, a trip which took them a full month. Harm himself wrote that it was 'a stormy trip on the unlucky ship Schmidt.'
The family first went to the area of Aplington, Iowa, to live. In 1976 Harm married Foske Van Dornum in Steamboat Rock, Iowa. Miss Van Dornum was also born in Germany and had come to America with her parents.
Eight years later, Harm with his wife, his four older children and his parents moved to a farm noth of Sheldon."

"The next year, in 1885, they moved to the farm in Dale Township, about four and a half miles east of George which was to be their home for many years.
Children in the family were Etta (Mrs. John Becker); Albert (married Augusta Mickelke); Valentina (Mrs. Harm Arends; Dick (married Fanna Willemssen); Diena (Mrs. George Becker); Fred (married Mary Beving; Harm (married Geneva Rust); Jennie (unmarried); and Henry (unmarried).

"Dick Behrends - - son of Harm V. Behrends, and Fanna Willemssen, daughter of Jacob U., were married in 1910. They farmed southeast of George. Their children were Frances (Mrs. Ted Timmer); Loraine (Mrs. Lorin Chadwick); Eunice (Mrs. Orval Lenderts); and Leona (who died young)."
