"Grietje Jansen Alberts Kordes 24 July 1820 - 1879 Female

Sometime around 1875 grandfather's (Jacob Cordes) sister Grietje Becker, (Grietje also spelled Gratia Cordes) who had remained in East Friesland decided to come to America. She was widowed, and wanted to bring her two younger children with her. Her three older children had already come to Illinois and settled. Grandfather (Jacob Cordes) sent money but it did not reach the proper authorities so Grietje was detained in New York. It finally seemed necessary for Grandfather to go to New York. Aunt Minnie, then a small girl remembers that Grandmother dreaded to see him set out on the journey . Altho' he went by train, it was a long, uncomfortable trip. When he reached New York he found that his sister had died there and the children, Frank and Tena, were being placed in an orphanage. Grandfather brought the children back with him. They worked out in the vicinity. One Sunday Frank drove over to Grandfather's with a brand new horse and buggy. Grandfather was not pleased for Frank still owed him money so he put the horse in his barn and told Frank he could have it again as soon as he had paid his debt.

He married Grietje Janssen Alberts Kordes in 1851 in Campen, Germany. Johann worked as an arbeiter or day laborer in the area of Uttum. Johann and Grietje were the parents of three boys and two girls. All of their children came to the United States. Johann died in 1877 just two years before his wife and youngest two children left for the United States.
