Theran L. Olson was born on April 12, 1921 in Colton, South Dakota the son of Mathew and Tennie (Midland) Olson. He died on Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at the Prairie Lakes Health Care Center in Watertown, SD at the age of 81 years.
Theran graduated from Brookings High School and then attended South Dakota State College. After receiving his education he farmed with his father in rural Brookings. He was united in marriage to Ernola Glatzel on June 23, 1943 in Brookings. After their marriage they farmed near the Aurora, Bruce and White areas. In 1967, they purchased the Red Owl Store in White which they operated until 1973. Theran was then married to Eileen Bruggeman from 1975 until 1988. After his retirement he traveled and resided in numerous communities.
He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and served on several of the church boards. He served as a Brookings County 4-H Leader for over 25 years, specializing in livestock and horticulture. He was active in the Brookings Sale Barn where he was employed and as a Deubrook School bus driver. He was also a member of the White Volunteer Fire Dept., the Watertown 55 Plus Center and the Brookings Senior Citizens. He enjoyed dancing, gardening, travel and spending time with his family and friends.
Theran is survived by one son, David Olson (Lorna) of Paullina, IA; three daughters Paula Johnson (Gary) of Brookings, SD, Jolene Townsend (Alan) of Conde, SD, Colleen Stratton (Greg) of Sioux Falls, SD; ten grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one brother Mathew Olson, Jr. (Alvera) of White, SD; and two sisters Geraldine Cheek of Fayetteville, GA. and Twila Wellborn (Earl) of Sun City West, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and two grandchildren.
