Note:
Emeline liked to be called "Emma." According to the 1880 census, when she was 10 years old she was living with her older sister Elizabeth Heilman Overly and Elizabeth's husband and their baby, as was her 16-year-old brother John.
Emma liked to quilt and would say, "By cracky," "Oh, Lordy," or "Oh catshit" when the thread would break. She kept the family farm going after her husband's death with the help of her youngest son Roy, until his death 2 years later in1933, on the second anniversary of his father's death; he was only 26 years old. Her oldest son Walter then moved his family onto the farm, and Walter eventually bought it. Emma lived in three places after that -- her son Forest's housein Hatton Township, her daughter Alta's house in Saginaw, and a small house across from Ellen Garver's farm, where she stayed for about two years. In 1934 an auction was held to sell off the personal property on the farm to settle debts.But most of the bidders were neighbors and friends of the Garver family, so they purchased most of the items for one dollar each. The money went to the bank to settle the debts, and Emma got to keep the items.
Emma died of a cerebral hemorrhage at her son Forest's home. She and her husband are buried in Cherry Grove Cemetery in Clare, MI, as is their son Roy.
Trip to Ohio -- Written by Dale Garver in 2002
About 1920 Charles and Emma (Heilman) Garver, along with daughters Mabel and Alta, made the trip from their home in Clare County, Michigan to Henry County, Ohio. Their mode of transportation was a Model T Ford. At the time a trip of thisduration by car was quite an undertaking. The Model T was stubborn to start and had a hand crank. It had three pedals on the floor, one for forward, one for reverse, and one for the brake. The throttle was a lever on the steering column.It rode on 3.5" x 33" tires. Charles' car had side curtains to reduce wind buffeting, and the two-piece windshield cranked out for ventilation.
The roads were all dirt except for a few paved or bricked sections in the towns. It was a rough, all-day ride to make the trip, which today can be done in a little over three hours. Food was packed for meals along the road. It probablyconsisted of sandwiches and cold tea, as this was a common picnic prepared by Emma.
The reason for making the drive was that John Heilman, Emma's brother, was very ill at the time. He lived with his sister Martha in Florida, Ohio in the house his father had built. During the visit, John never got out of his chair becauseof his sickness. Martha, who went by the name of Matt, tended to his needs. She was a tiny woman, well under five feet tall.
Charles and family stayed with Millie and Solomon Nye, Millie being Thomas and Mary Ann (Heilman) Garver's daughter. Their house was west of Napoleon and had two wells, one on either side of the house. One had sulfur water unfit to drink,while the other was potable. For one of the suppers, a chicken dinner was served. While there, Elizabeth (Heilman) Overly, Lib to her friends, was also visited; she was another of Emma's sisters.
