The same year the owner of the estate, John Blagrove Jr (1753-1824) of Cardiff Hall, St Ann, died. John Minto was manumitted 20 February of 1826, together with his four year older brother Charles, according to a slave registry of 28 June 1829 (Office of Registry of Colonial Slaves and Slave Compensation Commission: Records; Class: T 71; Piece Number: 194). Their father is not listed, but since they are both identified as "quadroon" and with the surname Minto in the same registry (unlike most of the other enslaved in the record who are not entered with a surname), it is very likely that their mother was, Margaret Dryden (b. 1802) who is listed in the same record and manumitted on the same date and who was of mixed race (noted as "mulatto" in the record) and that their father was a white man with the surname Minto. The Minto family was a wealthy planter family in Jamaica who owned among other estates Water Valley and Dry Valley estates in Trelawny. This corresponds to oral history from now living Minto descendents who claim that the brothers John Jarvis Minto (LVX8-3ZG) (1861-1915), William Shakespeare Minto and George Finlayson Minto (all sons of John Minto) were descendents of the white Mintos. There is, however, at least another man with the surname Minto, John Minto, an overseer, who lived in Hanover and worked in the vicinity. John Minto eventually moved to Trelawny and had many children with several different women in Hanover (Cascade) and Trelawny (Prospect in Clark's Town, Saltmarsh). He worked as a labourer and was possibly a resident (in 1884) at Orange Valley Estate, Trelawny. John Minto died 8 March 1900 at Martha Brae, Trelawny in the presence of his son George Finlayson Minto; he was by then a widower.
