LifeSketch: E3 Gloria May McFARLANE (1955-2011) During her years of study in Dunedin and at Southland Polytechnic in Invercargill to complete a secretarial course, Gloria gained skills which, added to her farm life experience, enabled her to pursue an itinerant lifestyle and sample many occupations. As an Australian resident from 1978 she worked as and qualified by correspondence to be an Australian wool classer, a career path lasting 12 years. From 1979 to 1984 her weekend and off season work base was in Perth while she was shedhandling or wool classing in the shearing industry up to 200 miles further north, as far south as Albany and in the outback past Kalgoorlie. She then spent ten years in the southeast where voluntary work included teaching adult literacy at Esperance from 1991-1993. On her return to Invercargill to be closer to family at Winton, Gloria retrained at the Southern Institute of Technology in Business Computing while working at Southwool Ltd’s woolstore prior to becoming a computer programmer in December 1998 at Southcom Ltd for seven years. From October 2005 she was employed as an IT specialist at Southern REAP in Winton. Gardening was her long term hobby.
