Graham Charles Somervell, WS (abt 13jul1854-3feb1889), son of Graham Somervell of Sorn Castle, Ayrs., died unm (History of the Society of Writers to Her Majesty's Signet).

Sorn estate and castle had been bought by Mr. Somervell in 1795; after the death of his youngest of that family the estates fell to Graham Russell, 5th son of the late Col. James Russell of Woodside, Stirlings., who assumed the name of Somervell; Graham marr a cousin from the family of Stirling of Kippendavie; in 1885 James Somervell, son of Col. James, resided at the castle (Historical and descriptive accounts of the castles and mansions of Ayrshire (1885), web). Sorn estate and castle had been bought by Mr. Somervell of Hamilton Farm, a Glasgow mercht, in 1795; in 1852 his dau Agnes was proprietrix (History of the County of Ayr (Paterson, 1852), vol. 2).

In 1813 Hamilton Farm, Rutherglen was an estate and elegant mansion of William Somerville, esq., (Topographical Dictionary of Scotland, googlebooks). Hamilton Farm, Rutherglen, was the property of Mr. Russell in 1858-61 (scotlandplaces).

The Mr. Somervell, who bought Sorn estate, was probably James Somervell of Hamilton Farm, who, with Provost Arthur Connell, founded “the great house of Somervell, Connell & Co., afterwards Somervell, Gordon & Co.”; David Russell, grandfather of Graham Russell, afterwards Graham Somervell of Sorn was a partner in the firm (Minute Book of the board of green cloth). Graham Russell was presumably related to the Somervells as he inherited Sorn.

From General Armory of England, Scotland etc.: Somerville or Somervell (Hamiltonsfarm, Ayrs.) As Lord Somerville, confirmed 1856 to the heir of entail, paternally Russell (gengophers).

This presumably refers to children of Jean Cross and James Somervell: William Somervell of Sorn d. 1818; he was succeeded by his sister, Christina Somervell or Brown; when she died she was succeeded by her sister, Miss Agnes Somervell (9oct1771-18jun1856), who was succeeded by Graham Russell, who assumed the name Somervell (Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald, 1892, findmpast).

In 1851 Graham Russell (1819 Larbert, W. India mercht), wife Henrietta Jane (1825 Edinburgh), dau Elizabeth (1846 Neilston) were at Govan (census freecen). In 1861 Graham Somervell (1819 Larbert, Stirlings., landed proprtr), wife Henrietta (1825 Midlothian), children (among others), Elizabeth (1848 Neilston, Renfrews.), Graham Charles (1855 Govan, Lanarks.), were at Sorn Castle, Ayrs. (census).

In 1841 Agnes Sommervel (1771 outside cty, independent) was at Sorn Castle; in 1851 Agness Somerville (1772 Glasgow, unm, landed proprtr) was at Sorn Castle (census freecen).
