Twenty five or so appearances in court

Although I only sourced the land purchase and will of George Anderson, Records show that he appeared in court several other times as witness, surety, neighbor and administrator, maybe up to twenty five separate times

MARRIAGE DATE: ABT 1719 OR 1739

Actual document in Orange Co. Order book

Waddell's Annals of Augusta County, Virginia, from 1726 to 1871

Early in 1740, or shortly before, there was a great influx of population into the Valley. On the 22d of May, 1740, fourteen heads of families appeared at Orange Court to “prove their importation.” The first order of the series is as follows:

Alexander Breckinridge came into Court and made oath that he imported himself, and _____, John, George, Robert, ___, Smith, _____, and Letitia Breckinridge from Ireland to Philadelphia, and from thence to this colony, at his own charges, and this is the first time of proving his and their rights in order to obtain land, which is ordered to be certified.” He, however, acquired by purchase from Beverley 245 acres, on March 24, 1741.

John Anderson, his wife, Jane, and his children, Esther, Mary and Margaret.

George Anderson, his wife, Elizabeth, and his children, William, Margaret, John and Frances.

(Actual record states as follows:

Information obtained through George Anderson will Augusta Co. Virginia records

George Anderson is likely the brother of John Anderson whose foursons settled in Augusta County. Accordingly the familiy traditions ofthat John state that he had a brother George and was reputedly born inScotland and moved to Ulster, Ireland before coming to Philadelphia.George and John were likely then still residents of Philadelphia whenthey patented lands in the area of central Virginia and shortlythereafter relocated there. Caution, George Anderson moved through the Augusta County Region andhis records may become confused with his allegded nephew and grandnephewof Augusta who had lands in Augusta and were referred to as George Sr.and George Jr. George 01/10/1736 Orange Co. 350a fork of Robinson River beginning at Elk Run adj Nicholas Ware patents 16/407 _______________________________________ Subj: George Anderson d1778 Date: 1/23/00 1:35:49 PM Eastern Standard Time From: (XXXXX@XXXX.XXX) To: (XXXXX@XXXX.XXX) (Anderson Patrick) Hi Patrick, I saw your listing on Gen Forum, my ancestor is Thomas Cofer d1791Madison Co VA . It is known that Thomas' mother'sname was Ann(e). Some time after the death of Thomas Cofer's father (nameunknown), Ann(e) married George Anderson of Culpeper. This GeorgeAnderson later moved to Bedford County, VA where he died testate. I havesome information on the movements of George Anderson and he may be theGeorge Anderson who was in St. Anne's parish, Essex County, VA in thelate 1720s. I live in Essex County, having moved here about 4 years ago.In fact, I attend Vauter's Episcopal Church (completed in 1731) which isthe upper church of St. Anne's parish. In any case, I've spent a good deal of time trying to link my ThomasCofer (d.c.1791) to the Cof(f)er line of Charles County, MD. Theprogenitor of the Charles County lines appears to be a John Cofer who wastransported to VA by Nathaniel Pope probably in the 1660s. He was claimedas a headright in 1666 by Thomas Pope (Nathaniel's son) and JohnWashington of Westmoreland County, VA. John Cofer was in Charles County,MD by at least 1673 according to the MD records. Interestingly, theCharles County Cofer line had a connection to Thomas Plunkett who died inCharles c.1717 (year his will was proved). This Thomas Plunkett did notseem to have any children. I have done some work on Virginia Plunket(t) lines trying to find a linkto the Cof(f)er line. When I saw your post on Lawrence Anderson and aMary Plunket, I became very interested, especially since you note theirchildren were born in Maryland. I'd be very appreciative of the sources of your information on MaryPlunket, and the Maryland connection. Also, are you familiar with the George Anderson of Orange/Culpeper/Bedford I mentioned? I have somefurther information on him from a book on the Underwood family. Sincerely, Mike Marshall ____________________________________________ Subj: [ANDERSON-L] Fw: ANDERSON/william H. /Green Co. George's famous importation

I refer to George's court appearance in Orange Co court to prove importation as infamous because it was in this record that casued this unexplainable "John" to become the father of the four brothers. As you may have read in other notes that I have recorded, this may or may not be true. It is true that George had a brother John that was proving importation in orange co Court, so couldn't be the John in George's. Also it is true that George had a son named John in 1742, Christened and recorded by the Rev John Craig, so John was not George's son, and it is also true that three of the four boys named their first born, John, giving speculation that John was a strong family name. BUT there is no record that the "John" George imported that day is the father of the four brothers.

The actual record of the family in the Orange County Courts order book reads as follows

George Anderson imports himself, wife Elizabeth, William Anderson, Margaret, John and Frances Anderson.
