From Cowan Family: Her mother was Campbell of the family of Argyle. Shemarried (1) John McDowell, probably in 1734 in Pennsylvania. After hisdeath in an ambush by Indians, Christmas Day 1742, she married (2)Benjamin Burden, Jr. and had a daughter, Martha, by him. She continuedto live at the place near Timber Ridge, called the Red House, where JohnMcDowell had settled.

After Burden't death she married (3) Colonel John Bowyer, twenty yearsyounger than herself. The 94 years to which she lived, gave ample timefor a full repentance of this singular marital adventure. Traditionstates that Colonel Bowyer destroyed the marital settlement by which thewary Magdalene had tried to secure her property to herself and herchildren,. He outlived her; thousands of acres of the lands which JohnMcDowell owned thus passed into the hands of the Bowyers.

DESCENDANTS-HISTORY:

Information about hundred of descendants of Magealena and her first husband were sent to T.Mason on 30 May 2004 by Norma Coon.

This was the widow of John McDowell who was killed in battle in 1742 with the Indians. Benjamin therefore became a step-father to the father of Dr. Ephriam McDowell (a prominent figure in history). Magdalena was the age 42. She had 3 children by McDowell: Samuel (14), James and Sarah (8). There is a controversy. She and Benjamin said had two daughters, Martha and Hannah (who is said to have died in childhood).

Thomas Mitchell, the old cashier at Danville, not only descended on his father's side from James Mitchell and Margaretta McDowell - daughter of old Ephraim, but on his mother's side was descended from Benjamin Hawkins and Martha Burden (Ben's & Madeline's daughter). After the death of her second husband, Magdalena Wood-McDowell-Borden, married a third time, Colonel Bowyer, a gentleman twenty years younger than herself. The 104 years to which she lived, gave her ample time for a full repentance of this marital settlement. He outlived her; and thousands of acres of the sightly lands which McDowell owned thus passed into the hands of Bowyers.

In 1753, the Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church made a call for a pastor, and she signed the roll Magdalen Borden (widow). She was a communicant of Timber Ridge Church from its organization in 1746 to her death in 1810.

John McDowell died 1742 without making conveyance. Armstrong brought suit in chancery, in which in 1752 it was ordered be made to Armstrong, but Armstrong has covenanted to convey to William Lusk the 200-acre tract for 26.10 pounds, beginning at a black oak; corner Isaac Taylor on Mill Creek, Daniel Lyle's line; corner Daniel Lyle and Edard Tarr.
