Jane Sturrock (M.S. Ormond), died as a result of drowning, aged 59, on 15 October 1879, at Vrombie Burn, Monikie. The informant was James Sturrock, son. Cert. Dist. 311, No. 14.

Her parents were Andrew Ormond and Jane Ormond (M.S. Watson).

EXTRACT FROM THE DUNDEE ADVERTISER DATED 20 OCTOBER 1879;

MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF A WOMAN AT MONIKIE

The police are making investigations respecting the death of Jane Ormond or Sturrock, wife of Mr. George Sturrock, crofter, Downiemuir, parish of Monikie. Mrs. Sturrock, who was fifty-nine years of age, left her home on Wednesday forenoon to visit her son at Denfind, about three miles distant. She appeared to be in her usual good health when she left her son's house in the course of the afternoon to return home, and she was seen and spoken to by several persons on the way. As the woman did not reach home that night, her husband concluded that she had resolved to stay with her son over the night. Her absence therefore did not alarm him, otherwise he would have instituted a search. From the time that the woman was seen passing Monikie Station nothing was heard of her till next morning, when her body was discovered in a ditch at the side of the road, within 500 yards of her own home, by a herd boy who was driving a number of cows to pasture. There was about a foot of water in the ditch at the time, and when found the woman's head was covered by the water. There were no marks of violence on the body, and no evidence of a struggle about the ditch; but an examination of the woman's purse showed that a £1 note was missing from it. It is known that Mrs. Sturrock had the £1 note when she left her son's house, and she was also known to have it at Monikie, when she gave a penny to a boy : but when found nothing remained in the purse except a sixpence.
