    LifeSketch: SIR GEORGE DE SETON was born about 1449 of Seton, East Lothian, Scotland, to Master John Seton (1436-1476) and Christian Lindsay (1430-1496.) He married Lady Margaret Campbell about 1474 of Scotland.n, Scotland, age 59.uot;George, Fourth Lord Seton, succeeded his grandfather, and exemplified in his person the hereditary love of learning in his family. Maitland says: 'He was much given to letters, and was cunning in diverse sciences, as in astrology, music, and theology. He was so devoted to study that even after his marriage he went to the University of Saint Andrew's, and after a while to that of Paris to prosecute his researches.' Between 1485 and 1503 he was engaged in the public affairs of the kingdom, while at the same time devoting considerable attention to his patrimonial estates, with a fine eye to architecture and to the dignity of religion. In this line he built Winton House, and laid out the garden and park around it; but his most enduring memorial is the Collegiate Church of Seton. . . There exists in the Advocates' Library at Edinburgh a Brief of Pope Alexander VI., written on vellum, and dated 1492: dans protestatem . . . ad procedendum ecclesia collegiate de Seton. In consequence, Lord Seton, on June 10, 1492, had the provisions of the Brief carried out by the ecclesiastical authorities to whom it ad been committed. . ." fair in the life of this lord was his capture by Dunkirkers in the course of one of his voyages to France. After losing all his baggage he was obliged to ransom his life from these Flemish pirates or privateers, but with the firm resolve to bide his time and punish them severely. This he did soon after, although at great cost to himself in land and money. On the 22d of January, 1498-99, as appears in the Register of the Privy Seal, he bought a ship from the King of Scotland called the Eagle, fitted her for war and put to sea against his enemies, slew many of them, and took and destroyed several of their vessels. The streamers and flags, embroidered with the family arms, used on this occasion were preserved at Seton Castle, and were seen and described by Alexander Nisbet, the writer on Heraldry, over two hundred years later."referred to as the 3rd Lord Seton because he was the 3rd Lord Seton with the name of George.t Seton Palace, the family seat in East Lothian, and made further donations to Seton Collegiate Church, which had been established by his ancestors.land, and went with him on the expedition into England in 1513. This campaign ended at the disastrous Battle of Flodden Field, where on 9 September, King James and Lord Seton were among the thousands of Scots who were killed. Lord Seton's body was returned to Scotland and interred at Seton Church beside that of his father.burn, daughter of Patrick Hepburn, 1st Earl of Bothwell. They had one surviving son, who later succeeded as 6th Lord Seton, and a daughter, Mariota (or Marion), who married, firstly Thomas, Master of Borthwick, secondly in 1530 she married Hugh Montgomerie, 2nd Earl of Eglinton, and thirdly, Alexander Graham of Wallacetown. pious lady, she continued to make gifts to Seton Church, and had new extensions built. When her son, the young Lord Seton, came of age, she retired to the Convent of Saint Catherine of Siena, at Edinburgh. This convent, founded 1517 by a bull of Pope Leo X, also benefitted from Lady Seton's donations. She died here in 1558 and was buried next to her husband at Seton.L was born 2 February 1456, Inverary Castle, Argyll, Scotland, to Earl Colin Campbell (1433-1493) and Lady Isabel Stewart (1427-1510.)
