"Mr. E. W. Ashby died at his home near Mimosa on Saturday, March 30, 1912, aged 76 years. Knowing that the cause of the South was right, he enlisted in the Confederate army and was a member of the Mulberry company. Those who served with him testify to his having been a good soldier, and all who were acquainted with him know there was never a better citizen in the couty. Early in life he united with the Primitive Baptist church and since then had kept himself in readiness to answer the summons, come when it might. For nine weeks, he had been sick, calmly awaiting the end, assuring his relatives that he was ready and death had been despoiled of its terror. To him it was only a change to a more glorious existence and now his spirit is stepping from cloud to cloud of glory. A well-spent life is the most priceless legacy he could have left his family. After the funeral service by Rev. J. V. Kirkland, the remains were buried at the Ashby graveyard."1. 1860 Lincoln County TN Census: Elias W. Ashby, 24, w, m, farming, b.
