Heroes of the Ouelle River
On August 20, 1690, a fleet of 32 ships carrying 2,000 soldiers under the command of William Phipps left the port of Boston bound for Quebec. His mission: to destroy the most important city of the French empire of America.
In Rivière-Ouelle, the priest Pierre de Francheville is as good a hunter as a good Catholic. His parishioners are ready to follow him to hell if necessary. Father Francheville has the idea that the Phipps boats will want to stock up on water and food before arriving in Quebec City. The tip of Rivière-Ouelle is a good place to do this. He was right. Several English ships anchor off and six boats occupied by 150 men approach the shore.
Thirty colonists from Rivière-Ouelle, armed with their hunting rifles, wait for them well hidden away from the shores of the shore. At the moment when the English hit the beach, Father Francheville gave the order to open fire. A hail of bullets hit the Phipps soldiers. Many are killed instantly. We do not count the wounded anymore. This is general panic. The English embarked in catastrophe in their boats and flee towards the open sea despite the contrary orders of their officers.
